Mother’s Day can be an emotional time for those who have lost their mom. Whether you have recently lost your mom, or a period of time has passed, the day can be difficult nonetheless. Even though she’s gone, Mother’s Day can serve as a time for you to do something special to pay your respect to the woman who taught you so much.
Your mom is one of the first role models in your life. Most importantly, she loved you unconditionally. You can show your unconditional love for your mom this Mother’s Day with these ideas below.

Ways to Pay Tribute to Your Mom on Mother’s Day
Write in a Journal
The great thing about a grief journal is that it can be anything that you want it to be. You could write how you’re feeling and what’s on your mind to help you cope with your grief. Or you could use it for honoring your mom’s legacy, such as by writing your favorite memories with her, stories about her, lists of her favorite things, or anything else that you’d like. Don’t be afraid to get creative with it and write a poem or song to honor her memory. It also could be for updating your mom on your life, so you can feel closer to her.
Plan a Get-Together with Family and Friends
To make Mother’s Day a little bit easier, you can spend it with family and friends. Whether you do an activity or just spend some time together, you can give each other support. For example, you could visit her gravesite or ash scattering location or make mementos together. If everyone lives in different places, you could have a virtual meet-up instead.
Visit Someone Else’s Mom
Another idea is to spend the day with someone else and their mom. One option is to hang out with your significant other and their mom. Or you could spend time with a close friend and their mom who is like a second mom to you. If you’re fortunate enough to still have your grandma, you could spend the day with her. Or you could visit your local nursing home and spend it with residents who may not have family in the area and could use some company.
Watch Her Favorite Movie and/or Listen to Her Favorite Album
Was your mom a huge movie buff? Or was she an avid music fan? If so, you could spend the day watching her favorite movies or listening to her favorite music. To get a list together, you could have your entire family brainstorm movies and songs that she loved. Then, you could watch or listen to them together.
Do One of Her Hobbies
Did your mom love gardening? Or was she always reading a book? Another way to spend Mother’s Day is to do one of her favorite hobbies in her honor. It’s also a great way to learn something new and feel closer to her through the shared hobby.
Go to Her Favorite Places
Gather your loved ones to spend the day in her favorite places. Whether it’s a local hiking trail, winery, coffee shop, or another go-to place, you can all feel closer to her by visiting the places she frequented the most.
