How Families Can Still Show Support If They Can’t Attend the Funeral

Posted by: Erin Ward in Funeral Advice | July 9, 2021

Sometimes, situations arise where families are unable to attend a loved one’s funeral service. But, there are still ways that you can show your support to the grieving family and honor their loved one.

Below are just a few ways you can show your support from afar.

Attend the Live Stream

If the family is live streaming the funeral service, you can still attend it virtually. Or, you can watch the funeral service later if you’re unavailable during it.

Send a Sympathy Card And/Or Gift

To express your condolences, you can send the family a sympathy card and share your sadness about not being able to attend the funeral in person. You also can send them a meaningful memento. Consider making a handmade memento or having it personalized with their loved one’s name to make it that much more special. Or, you can contribute to the funeral expenses or donate funds to their chosen charity.

Deliver Meals to the Family

Adjusting to life without their loved one may be difficult, so you can help the grieving family by prepping some meals for them. You also can offer to go grocery shopping for them or pick up their online grocery order. If you don’t live in the same area as the family, you could send them a meal preparation subscription to help make meal planning a little easier while grieving.

Ask How They’re Doing

Most importantly, make sure to check in on them and see how they’re doing. However, make sure to be respectful of their time to grieve and don’t be too intrusive. Just let them know that you’re here for them if they need someone to talk to someone or just want some company.
