Stanford Allen

Obituary Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 Stanford G. Allen, Jr. Stanford G. Allen, Jr. was born on September 22, 1939 in Locustville, VA. to the late Mr. Stanford G. Allen, Sr. and Annie Allen. He was educated by the public school system and graduated from Mary N. Smith High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and spent 5½ years on active duty, serving tours in Korea, Japan, Germany and France. After 2½ years in Germany, he returned to the United States and was honorably discharged in March of 1964. He returned to Virginia and spent a few weeks with his family before moving to New York, after which he gained employment as a Machinist. In 1982, Brother Allen joined White Rock Baptist Church, where he was baptized and gave his life to Christ. Early in 1983 he joined the Usher Board and was elected to the Trustee Board. On April 14,1984 Brother Stanford Allen Jr. and Sister Martha were united in marriage at White Rock Baptist Church by the late Reverend Andrew B. Cooper. In 1985, Brother Allen received a certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Spiritual Education by the Sunday School Department of White Rock Baptist Church and was ordained a Deacon. He served as an Usher, Trustee, and honorable Deacon until August 1988. In 1988, Mr. and Mrs. Stanford G. Allen moved to Onley, VA, Brother Allen’s hometown, and joined St. Luke A.M.E. Church in Daugherty, VA. As a valued member of St. Luke, he served as a Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, Bus Driver, Willing Worker, Male Chorus, Senior Choir, and Combined Choir Member, Sunday School Teacher and Finance Committee Member. Mr. Allen has taken many pursuits in his lifetime. In addition to serving his country in the United States Army, he worked for the New York City Transit Authority as well as drove and owned a cab service. When he returned to Virginia, he again worked with his father at Onley Salvage and later ran the business until he retired after becoming ill. In his free time, he was an avid bowler for over forty (40) years, winning many awards. He loved bowling with his family, and they loved and enjoyed bowling with him. He is survived by: his wife, Martha Allen; children, Stanford R. Allen, Renee Holdclaw, Michelle Holdclaw, Robert A. Allen, and Esther Marie; sisters, Marion Allen, Bernita Nock (Leroy) and Mary Rankin; sister-in-law, Aletha Allen; seven (7) grandchildren; five (5) great-grandchildren and a host of relatives, family and friends.
