Harry Hill -GLBFH Obituary

Jonesboro- Harry Mills Hill, 93, passed away Wednesday, December 11, 2019. He was born December 8, 1926 in Nashville, Arkansas to the late Harry and Bernie Mills Hill. As a young teenager in Jonesboro, he worked for his dad at Hill Ice and Fuel Company delivering ice for the town’s home ice boxes. He loved airplanes and at the age of fourteen, he learned to fly at the Jonesboro airport and got a pilot license. He graduated Jonesboro High School and enlisted on June 8, 1944 shortly after DDay on June 6. His mom had to sign for him as he was only seventeen. Active duty started May 24, 1945. He served in the Army Air Corp in the signal Corp in World War II during Marshall Islands Pacific Theater. Harry had been a Sargent and a cryptographic technician in the 145th Army Airways Communication Squadron. He left the service November 15, 1946. He enlisted October 17, 1949 in the Air Force Reserve and was honorably discharged on February 16, 1953. He graduated University of Arkansas with electrical engineering degree and was past member of the AIEE – American Institute of Electrical Engineers. He worked as a special service engineer at Schlumberger, an oil surveying company in Oklahoma for thirteen years. They returned to Arkansas and owned and operated OTASCO in Trumann till its closing and later worked for First National Bank of Trumann as a loan officer and vice-president. He enjoyed building and flying RC model airplanes and had built his family ski boat from a kit and loved taking the family to the lake and water skiing. He was a member and past president of Trumann Lions Club, past board member of Trumann United Methodist Church and past St. Bernard’s auxiliary member. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Jonesboro, where the Mrs Harry Hill Sunday School class is named in honor of his mother. He is survived by his children, Steve Hill (Janis) of Jonesboro, Art Hill (Jill) of Tontitown, Luann Higgins (Junior) of Jonesboro and Alan Hill (Patti) of Ft Smith; twelve grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Hill in August of this year. A celebration of his life will be 2:00 pm Monday, December 16, 2019 at First United Methodist Church Chapel with Rev. John Miles II officiating. Burial will be private under the direction of Gregg Langford Bookout Funeral Home. Lasting memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church of Jonesboro.
