Larry Hartman was born under a wandering star on August 20, 1959. He spent his childhood on the family farm near New Market, Iowa, roaming freely and creating many adventures with his brothers and sisters. Larry's mom always knew where the kids were by looking for the dogs. They played in the timber, had contests on the big cliff south of the house, built dams and played endless games of football, (Larry was a Minnesota Viking, Bill was a Chicago Bear and Carol Sue was a switch player). In the winter they went sledding, ice Skating and played King of the Hill and Basket ball in the haymow. Larry played football in high school for the New Market Miners. He was all conference Honorable Mention his junior and Senior year. He graduated from High School in 1978, with many lifelong friends, especially Doug Pittman, Mark Davison and Steve Davison. Though Larry enjoyed the farm life, he was pulled to the mountains of Montana. He earned a degree in Forestry and there found his life long niche. Larry loved working in the mountains and with people he considered friends as well as co-workers. In 1986 Larry started a Fporest Consulting Business with Robert Rettenmeir, and with the help of Thad Wollan, Will Smith and others, created a successful business. Several nephews worked summers throughout the years for Larry and also helped him build his cabin. They managed their business for several years, later transitioning to employment in the national Forest Service, most recently stationed in Sandpoint, ID. In 1993, On the shore of Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park, Larry married the love of his life and fellow adventurer, Rochelle Barlau. Larry and Rochelle were avid hikers, campers and kayakers. They spent twenty years hiking through the western United states, Alaska, Canada and New Zealand. They had a special fondness for the Bob Marshall wilderness in western Montana. They built a small homey cabin on theie land near Eureka, MT. Larry was a good host for family traveling to Montana. He always knew the best camping, hiking, fishing, rafting and Huckleberry picking areas. The family had many adventures and mor than a few mishaps along the way. With a couple of white water wipeouts and never ending rafting trips (that were supposed to be just a three hour tour). If Larry said a hike was arduous, the flatlanders knew it would be impossible. He most recently planned a family reunion last July near Troy, Montana which everyone greatly enjoyed. Larry continued to plan trips up until his last few days. He and Rochelle drove to Oregon in November and he saw the ocean for one last time. It's trite to say a person fought cancer with courage, but Larry truly did. He accomplished many things while being sick through sheer will power and grit. On December 12th Larry told Rochelle, "I'm ready to go home now" and he left this world surrounded by his wife, mom and siblings. Larry is survived by his loving wife, Rochelle, his mother Jean Hartman of Clarinda Iowa, his brothers and sister, Galen (Leanne), Cheryl King (Ron), Roger (Dee) , Linda Hruby (Denny), Bill (Kellie), and Carol. Larry also had many nieces and nephews and good friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Hartman. Per Larry's wishes, he was cremated. His ashes will be spread around he and Rochelle's cabin and at a high mountain point yet to be determined. Rochelle and the family would like to thank the Schneidmiller Hospice House of Northern Idaho for their compassion and care in Larry's final week.
