Richard Thomas Coe Obituary

Richard Thomas Coe - Loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Richard Thomas Coe died peacefully in the hospital surrounded by family on December 2, 2019 in Royal Oak, Michigan at the age of 87. Richard is survived by his wife Dolores, son Paul (Jessie), stepson David (Hannah), grandchildren Rick (29), Elizabeth (25), Juliana (3), and Ella (9 months). He is preceded in death by his Mother (Olive) and Father (Thomas). Richard was born on May 10, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan to Thomas and Olive Coe. He graduated from Wheaton College in 1953 with BA in Ancient Languages and later from Northern Baptist Seminary in 1957 with a Masters of Divinity. Richard was an ordained Minister after he graduated, and that is where he found his love for counseling and the law. He pastored several churches including a Hebrew Christian church for recent converts from Judaism to Christianity. In 1965 he graduated from University of Detroit with his Doctorate of Jurisprudence. He loved the law, but his passion was in counseling. After 20 year of being a practicing attorney he went on to achieve his Master of Counseling from Oakland University. Richard had a love for music even at a early age when he started playing the piano at the age of 5. He learned how to play the organ, clarinet, accordion, and banjo as well. Richard was a member of the Max Davey Singers, where he sang bass. He was an accomplished actor. He was a member of the Farmington Players, performing in many productions including leading roles in Hello Dolly, Arsenic and Old Lace, and Inherit the Wind. He was also a sailor, racing Lightnings on Cass Lake and pleasure sailing there and on Lake Saint Clair. For all his degrees and accomplishments, he will be best remembered as a Loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Richard knew how to make anyone smile by telling one of his well-rehearsed jokes. He was a Masters-level bridge player, and in his later days Richard enjoyed playing cards while sipping brandy. He enjoyed watching Michigan football, and was a loyal Tigers fan till the end. A Visitation is scheduled for 10 AM at A.J. Desmond (3725 Rochester Road, Troy, MI 48083), followed by a Memorial Service. A reception will follow at Woodside Bible Church, 6600 Rochester Road, Troy, MI 48085. Pastor Benson will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Richards life. ~Lovingly submitted by the family ~ Funeral Home: A.J.
