CUMBERLAND – Carl Burton “Burt” Hadley, 83, of Cumberland, passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2019, at home, surrounded by his family. Born May 13, 1936, in Lonaconing, he was the son of the late George Edward Hadley and Mary D. (Holmes) Hadley. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary Catherine (Rose) Hadley; son, George Hadley; brothers, Earl Hadley and wife Mary, Edward Hadley and wife Nellie, Jack Hadley and wife Ruth, George Hadley and wife Dorothy, and Douglas Hadley and wife Sonya; sisters, Elnora “Nonnie” Starkey and husband Charles, and Helena Bloom and husband Dennis; brothers-in-law, James Logan, and James Crabtree; and sisters-in-law, Delores Rose, Loretta Dixon, and Hilda Peterson. Burt attended Allegany High School. Following high school, Burt enlisted in the United States Army. Upon returning to Cumberland, he met the love of his life, his wife, Mary, whom he married on November 26, 1960. Burt was a Machinist Helper for the CSX Transportation Company until his retirement. Burt was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Our Lady of the Mountains Parish. At the church, he was a church usher, member of the Martha’s Group, and a Eucheristic Minister. He was a member of the American Legion, and a member of the South Cumberland Business and Civic Association. Burt enjoyed fishing, and he and his wife, Mary, loved to travel. He is survived by two sons, Craig B. Hadley and wife Bridget, and Keith E. Hadley and wife Kristie; daughter, Tammy Marie Deatelhauser and husband William; grandchildren, Tonya Marie Deatelhauser and William Suter, Charles B. Deatelhauser, Elisabeth Grimes and husband A. Scott, Sr., Nichole Bishop and husband Travis, Andrea Blackburn and husband Jason, Kayla Emerick and husband Jesse, Taylor Teaford, Meghan Teaford, and Mary Kaitlyn Hadley; great-grandchildren, Angela, William, Cace, A.J., Kinsley, Drake, Junior, Rowynn, Arabella, Cage, Baylen, and Vivian, and a great-grandson , Phillip, who is expected to be born in March; sister, Hilda Logan; brothers-in-law, Donald Rose and wife Sandy, Leo Rose and wife Dorothy, George Rose and wife Rennie, Pete Rose and wife Pat, and Bill Peterson; and sister-in-law, Rita Crabtree. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Sunday, November 24, 2019, from 5-8 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home at 7:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 300 E Oldtown Road, Cumberland, on Monday, November 25, 2019, at 11 a.m. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Fort Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Burt’s memory may do so by making contributions to the Home Hospice Program at the Western Maryland Health System, 1050 Industrial Blvd, Suite 19, Attn: Candy Adams, Cumberland, MD, 21502. Guests are invited to attend a bereavement luncheon at St. Mary's Social Hall, 300 E Oldtown Road, Cumberland, following the committal service.
