Phyllis June Hays

Phyllis June Hays, 92, died at 5 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015, at her residence. Phyllis was born Jan. 18, 1923, in West Frankfort, to Arthur and Beulah (Horrell) Hays. Miss Hays was a kindergarten teacher for 41 years and also taught Sunday school for 75 years at First Baptist Church in West Frankfort. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Delta Theta Tau. She loved to travel and do jigsaw puzzles. Survivors include sisters, Allis Hays of West Frankfort, and Ruth Lynn McConnaughey of St Louis; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Hays Payne and Lois Hays; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great- nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, James, Tom, Horrell and Robert “Bob” Hays; and sisters, Dorothy Douvan and Mary Margaret Willershausen. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, in First Baptist Church in West Frankfort, with Brother Mike Cash officiating. Burial will be in Tower Heights Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Dec. 30, at Union Funeral Home, and from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Clothing Room. Envelopes will be available and accepted at the funeral home.
