Michael Frederick Berni Obituary

Michael Frederick Berni, 89, of Silverdale, passed away on November 3, 2019. Michael was born December 31, 1929, in Portland, Oregon, to Catherine Beck and Albert F. Berni. He was the youngest of their three children. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Portland in 1948 and went on to the University of Washington, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration in 1952. Following graduation, he served in the US Navy for two years on the LST 1146, being honorably discharged in 1954 with the rank of Lieutenant JG. In 1954, Michael began his career in the wood products industry, including working for US Plywood and Champion International. In 1956, he married his sweetheart, Jane Selby. Together they celebrated 63 years of marriage and raised two daughters. For many years, they lived in Concord, California, transferring to Eugene, Oregon, in 1978. After retirement, they moved to Poulsbo, Washington, to live near their daughter, Sue. Michael was a true gentleman. Even on a bad day, when asked how he was doing, he usually characterized himself as ‘virtually perfect.’ He was well loved for his gentle sense of humor, which was often infused with wry wisdom. Throughout his life, he was a prodigious reader, loving history, cars and boats. He would not play Trivial Pursuits with the family, but he would sit aside in his chair and volunteer many correct answers. He enjoyed the meticulous task of model ship building. He loved sailing, and he built his own 16’ wooden boat that he sailed in the Sacramento Delta. He loved photography and took many wonderful black and white photographs of nature. Later in life, he was a believer in afternoon power naps. Michael is survived by his wife, Jane, his daughters, Mary and Sue (Kyle), his grandchildren, Carl (Bo), Anne, Sarah, and Katherine, and one great granddaughter. A memorial will be held at a later date; please contact the family for details. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to a charity of your choice or the Northwest Maritime Center (nwmaritime.org). Arrangements entrusted to the Stone Chapel Poulsbo Mortuary.
