Bonnie J. Sloan Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Bonnie J. Sloan of Holland, Ohio, announces her passing at the young age of 84. She was born on January 15, 1932 in Toledo, OH to Donald and Florence MacVay. Bonnie married the love of her life, Gordon W. Sloan, on June 16, 1956 who passed away in December of 2006 after 50 years of marriage. From a very young age, Bonnie was on her way to a long and illustrious career as an educator spanning over 51 years towards a gift she dearly loved. She was a student teacher at the age of nineteen and began her career at Raymer School (‘52 to ’61). She was a Teaching Fellow at the University of Toledo (’61-’62), Assistant Principal at McKinley School (’62-’63) and Principal at Burroughs School (’63-’66). She completed her last elementary assignment after operating as Principal of Edgewater School for 18 years. She retired these accomplishments in 1988. During her administrative capacities, Bonnie served many dual appointments as Director of Student Field Experiences, Curriculum Specialist and Elementary Curriculum Supervisor for the Toledo Public Schools while continuing as an Instructor for evening and summer methods classes at the University of Toledo. She held both of these institutions very dear to her heart. Dr. Sloan refocused her next adventure to higher education at Defiance College as Assistant Professor of Education (’88-’92), Associate Professor of Education with Tenure granted (’92-2000) and became Professor of Education in 2000, retiring in 2001. Among her most cherished awards are being named as the first woman to receive the Distinguished Waite Alumna Award in 1992, the Phi Delta Kappa Service Key, The Distinguished Faculty Award at Defiance College and the Distinguished Alumna Award from Judith Herb College of Education. Many happy memories are attached to the wonderful students and colleagues, fun, successful initiatives, and accomplishments over these years. Bonnie was a proud 1948 Waite High School graduate. She graduated from the University of Toledo in 1952, Magna cum laude, with a B.Ed. She received her M.Ed. in 1962, her Ed.S.in 1973 and her Ed.D. 1978. Bonnie was one of the first women admitted to the Toledo Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, one of many educational associations she was honored to be a part of during her lifetime. Bonnie was truly an educationalist. She has helped many pursue their dreams with the shared passion for learning and educating that she had. More recently Bonnie had been involved with Flower Hospital Auxiliary, life member of the Lucas County Retired Teachers Association, member of the Toledo Museum of Art, member of Women and Philanthropy at the University of Toledo and P.E.O. She also served as a member of Defiance College Board of Trustees for several years. Bonnie was loved by many but held a special place in her heart for family. She loved “girls only” road trips, lifetime movies and Friday afternoon lunch dates with her nieces. She treasured her collection of school house antiques, jewelry (“bling”), art and reading. She also truly enjoyed long telephone conversations with her lifelong friends, near and far. Dr. Sloan was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; her parents; and her niece, Elizabeth Sloan. She is survived by her brother, Harry B. (Connie) MacVay and family, Harry MacVay, Cathie (Bernie) Weiss, Brian (Tina) MacVay, Brenda (Tom) Kuns, Marsha Thomas, and Laura (Ron) Kuzma. Brother-in-law and sister-in-law Douglas (Verna) Sloan and family, Jeff (Sarah) Sloan, Carol (Vernon) Jones, Holly (Patrick) Rigg. Bonnie leaves behind many great nieces and great nephews and lifelong friends, Ellie, Joyce, Mary, Millie, and Olga. Bonnie’s wish was for no visitation but for her family, friends and colleagues to come together to Celebrate Her Life. Please join us on Sunday, May 8th from 1 to 4:00 p.m. at the Ward Pavillion at Wildwood Metro Park at 5100 W. Central Ave. Toledo. We will bid farewell to a special sister, aunt and friend. The family would like to extend our heartfelt thank you to the staff at Oregon LanePark and Heartland Hospice for their special care for Bonnie during her stay. Dr. Bonnie J. Sloan’s final class will be with HIM.
