Daniel T. Tharp

Daniel T. Tharp, 57, a longtime resident of the Vernonia community, died Monday, October 28, 2019, at Community Hospice Care Center in Longview, WA. Private Burial Rites were held at Willamette National Cemetary, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd, in Portland. Daniel Thomas Tharp was born January 3, 1962, in Verdun, France, the son of the late Daniel Tharp and Virginia (Stevens) Tharp. He was raised in the United States, having lived in Georgia, California, Alaska and Washington. Daniel was a graduate of Napavine High School, Class of 1980. He joined the United States Navy in February 1983, while still living in Chehalis, Washington. Daniel served for 3-1/2 years until receiving his honorable discharge on August 11, 1986, on Whidbey Island, Washington, at the rank of E-3. Daniel had received several citations including the Sea Service Deployment ribbon and the Meritorious Unit Commendation ribbon. He was united in marriage to Sylvia M. Davis on February 10, 1996, at the home of Daniel’s aunt and uncle’s home in a simple service in Washington. They later married again in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where they were members in Blackwell, Oklahoma, August 15, 2010. They celebrated their 23rd Anniversary on February 10, 2019. Following their marriage, they moved back to Oregon, settling in the Vernonia community where they have resided since. Daniel worked as a field service engineer for Intel Inc. for several years, and held other positions in the electronics field before retiring. Among his special interests, he enjoyed bead work making rosaries, scrimshaw, making bracelets and earrings. When he was younger, he was a member of the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA). Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel F. Tharp and Virginia Tharp. Survivors include Sylvia Tharp of the family home in Vernonia, OR, his sisters Teri and Tami of Washington, and his sister-in-law, Melody Turner, of Vernonia, Oregon. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles, and cousins. The family suggests remembrances may be contributions to Bonnie Hays Small Animal Shelter, 1901 SE 24th Avenue, Hillsboro, OR 97123, in his memory.
