Joseph Flores Obituary

Joseph L. Flores, 89, died on October 7, 2019. Admiral Flores was born January 25, 1930, in San Francisco California. He attended St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and Economics. He joined the United States Navy in April 1953. He met and married his wife-the former Mary Ellen Lee of Savannah, Georgia while he was attending the Supply Corps, School in Athens Georgia. His tours of duty included the Naval Supply Center, Pearl Harbor, Naval Supply Systems Command, Washington, D.C., Supply Officer onboard the submarine tender USS Holland (AS 32), homeported in Rota, Spain. Ships Parts Control Center in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Commanding officer of the Naval Supply Center in Charleston, S.C. Naval Supply System Command in Washington, D.C. Admiral Flores retired as the head of the logistics command for the Pacific Fleet. His medals include: the Meritorious Service Medal, The Navy Commendation Medal, the American Defense Medal; and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. After the Navy, he became a Vice President of the Bank of Hawaii. As a key supporter of the United States Navy in Hawaii, he volunteered as the President, Honolulu Council, Navy League, of the United States and helped support the design and construction of the Pearl Harbor memorial. Joseph moved to Sun City Center, Florida in 1995. He was an active member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church where he served as an usher for a decade. He spent many years volunteering with Our Lady of Guadalupe Food Pantry. He was an avid golfer and loved to travel. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Flores. He is survived by his wife Theresa Flores and his sons, Michael Flores and his wife Tracy of Charleston, S.C., Dominic Flores of Boca Raton, Florida and Rene Flores and his wife Michelle and two granddaughters, Savannah and Emma Flores of Keller, Texas. A Funeral Mass will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 702 Valley Forge Blvd. Sun City Center, FL 10:00 AM, Monday, October 21. A Military Honor Guard ceremony will take place immediately following the Mass. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to LifePath Hospice, Sun City Center, FL, 3725 Upper Creek Dr. Ruskin, FL 22573.
