Wilson, 98, a lifetime resident of Madison, died September 12, 2019 , at Presbyterian Manor in Emporia, Kansas.She was born on March 11, 1921 in Neosho Rapids, Kansas the daughter of William J. and Mable Mounkes Sunquist. Elaine was a graduate of Neosho Rapids Rural High School and attended Stewart Beauty Academy in Topeka.  She worked at Hutton Beauty shop in Emporia for several years before her marriage. On November 7, 1943 she married Ray Elwood Wilson. They farmed in the Lamont area all their lives, and had important friendships with their many neighbors in the area at the time.  Elaine helped with the farming and was a homemaker and mother of her three children. She was active in her local Homemakers Extension Unit, Royal Neighbors, and belonged to the Lena Valley Methodist Church and the Madison Methodist Church. She played a wonderful, positive role in the lives of her grandchildren and to their delight, had a large collection of teddy bears.  She was well-known by all for her amazing cooking, especially her amazing fried chicken. Their veterinarian, Dr. Barr, would be sure to time his visits to coincide with the noon meal. She worked hard in the garden with Ray and preserved large amounts of garden produce every year. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Ray in December of 1996, her parents, a sister Rosemary Bulson, a brother Donald W. Sunquist who died in infancy and her daughter Cheryl Rae Gowen and son-in-law Richard Gowen. She is survived by her daughter Lana Elaine (Robert) Schindler of Madison, her son John (Annie) Wilson of Elmdale, and her grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason) Thornley, Joe (Holly) Schindler, R. Darren Gowen, Dana (Kent Scott) Gowen, Katie (Travis) Hancock, Emily (Zak) Barnes, and Julia (Jeremy) Johns. She had eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, September 16, 2019 at the VanArsdale Funeral Home in Madison. Burial will follow services at Lena Valley Cemetery. The Family will receive friends an hour prior to services Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Madison United Methodist Church and sent in care of the VanArsdale Funeral Home at P.O. Box #488, Madison, Kansas 66860.
