Richard H. Post Grand Rapids, Michigan Obituary

Richard H. Post

Dr. Richard H. Post went to his heavenly reward on December 12th, 2015. Dick was a man of faith and education who shared his commitment and life’s work experience freely with all he met. Born in Rock Valley, IA May 15th, 1920, his family moved to Grand Rapids, MI in 1924. He was a 1938 graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High and Calvin College in 1942. While at Calvin, he met Joan Clark of Denver, CO. Following four years in The Army Air Corps, he was discharged in March of 1946. On March 28th, 1946, he married Joan and settled in Denver. They joined First Christian Reformed Church where he would serve as Deacon, Elder and Teacher. In the fall of 1946 both Richard and Joan were hired as teachers at Denver Christian School. The following year he was made Principal of the newly formed Denver Christian High School. He served there for 10 years and had a lifelong commitment to Christian Education. He completed a Masters’ Degree in Counseling at The University of Colorado in 1954 and a Doctorate in Education from The University of Denver in 1969. He went on to careers at the Colorado Department of Rehabilitation as its first State Director and Community College of Denver Red Rocks as the Dean of Students. He served for many years on the Board of the National Union of Christian Schools and served as Board member and President of the Denver Christian Schools several times. In retirement he pursued interests in travel, books, Model ‘A’ Fords and the preservation of church history for the Calvin College Heritage Center. A move to Grand Rapids, MI in 2004 re-united Dick and Joan with friends and relatives from their Calvin College years. Joan pre-deceased him in 2006 after 60 happy years, as did his brothers John and Henry and his sister Margret Engbers. He is survived by brothers Gerret and Bill and his sister Adriana Ophoff and many cousins, nephews and nieces. Dick and Joan had three children: Anne Post of Denver, CO, Mary (Rich) Nyhof of Grand Rapids, MI and Tim (Cyndi) of Grand Rapids, MI. He was proud of his five grandsons and three great grandchildren. He was especially close to the second love of his life, Mary Prince whom he met in 2008. They spent many happy hours together sharing friends, family, history, travel and a common love of LaGrave Christian Reformed Church. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service, officiated by Dr. Stan Mast, will be held at the Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton SE, on Saturday, December 19th, 2015 at 2:00PM. The family will be at the Chapel one hour preceding the service to greet friends and family. Memorial contributions may be made to the LaGrave Christian Reformed Church Christian Education Society.
