Neil Allan Crane, MD Bethesda, Maryland Obituary

Neil Allan Crane, MD

Dr. Neil Crane passed away suddenly on Sunday, August 18, 2019 to dwell in the house of the Lord for all eternity. Beloved husband of Marianne Kabes-Crane; devoted father of Rebecca Regnery (husband John), Susan Crane Eaves (husband Guy) and Samantha Crane (wife Julia Curlee); cherished grandfather of Lily Ann and Holly Eaves and Tamara Curlee Crane; and loving brother of Lynne Schneider and then he is also survived by cherished nieces and their 10 children in St. Louis, the city of his birth. Born April 11, 1939 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late Samuel and Anne Crane, Neil excelled in academics and sports at University City High School and served as president of his high school class. He maintained close friendships with many of his classmates throughout his life. In 1961, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Princeton University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He decided to pursue a career in medicine, however, and subsequently graduated from Washington University Medical School in St. Louis. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Society. After prestigious internship and residency at Barnes Hospital at Washington University, and fellowships in research in infectious diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Neil practiced internal medicine with a specialty in infectious diseases first at the Group Health HMO and then in private practice in Chevy Chase, Maryland. In the little free time that he had, Neil reveled in the company of his family- he was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather. He cared so much for them and for friends from every aspect of his life-school, medicine, church, neighbors and interest groups. In his retirement, Neil was a voracious reader and learner. He became an avid bridge player. He volunteered his time for Bethesda Helps. Neil was a beautiful, kind and gentle human being who will be greatly missed by so many. A private family viewing will be held at PUMPHREY'S BETHESDA-CHEVY CHASE FUNERAL HOME. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church, 6900 River Road, Bethesda, MD on Monday, August 26 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be private. A Celebration of Neil's life will be planned for later in the fall.
