Daisy Lena McElvene Obituary

Sunrise September 9, 1930 Sunset, August 15, 2019
Daisy Lena McElvene was born on September 9, 1930 in Seneca, South Carolina. She was educated in the Seneca school system and graduated from Oconee County Training School in 1947. She moved to Toledo in 1955 to join her sister, nephew, cousins and uncle. The following year she joined the fellowship at Phillips Temple CME church (then on Lawrence and Palmwood) and was a member for over 62 years. She was a Sunday School Teacher and was active in the missionary society as well as other church organizations and projects. She often made corsages/floral arrangements for various church functions.

Daisy attended Davis Business College and was very proud of herself when she mastered this thing called the “typewriter” (complete with carbon). She also attended the University of Toledo and began to focus on early childhood education. She was a pre-school teacher for over 35 years, first, in the Head Start Program and later at the Granny Thomas Daycare.

She enjoyed arts &crafts, (JOANN’S, MICHAEL’S and HOBBY LOBBY….whoa!) gardening, baking, making homemade ice-cream, sewing and crocheting. She often made special treats for children at the day care center or worked with them on special holiday crafts. Many of these things she found a special joy in doing with her great-grand daughter, Jaye’Lynne or “J”.

Daisy is survived by her daughters, Mary Carter, Nashville, TN, Karen (Ron), and a son, Raymond (Alesheya). She leaves four grandchildren, Kara McElvene, David McElvene, Dom McElvene (Becky) and Tomeka Carter. …..her constant companion and “helpful” great grand daughter, Jaye’Lynne. She has two devoted cousins, Marilyn Stribling and Mubarek Nazir’ud’din. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Mattie, sister, Annie and favored nephew, John, and a host of other relatives and cousins in the Michigan and South Carolina regions.
