Raymond Kaplan Obituary

Raymond Kaplan of Yorktown Heights, a physics professor and real estate businessman, died on August 5, 2019 at the age of 90. Dr. Kaplan taught as a professor at Cooper Union, Fordham University and SUNY Maritime College in New York City, and Pace University in Westchester County. He also worked as an owner and operator of residential real estate in New York. Dr. Kaplan was born in 1929 in New York City to Bennie and Helen Kaplan. He earned his undergraduate degree from the City College of New York, a PhD in Physics from Columbia University in New York in 1952, and subsequently did post-doctoral work at Berkeley University in California. In 1965, Dr. Kaplan married Elizabeth Morgan in New York City. They had two children, Paul, born in 1967, and John, born in 1970. John died unexpectedly last year. Dr. Kaplan was a longstanding member of the American Physical Society, a board member of Friends of Music of Westchester County, and belonged to a number of political and civil rights organizations. During the 1960s, he was active in the civil rights movement as a member of the Congress of Racial Equality. Dr. Kaplan will be remembered for his dedication to family, his love of music and travel, and his commitment to social fairness and justice. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, of Yorktown Heights, and his son, Paul, of New York City. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Friends of Music or Workmen’s Circle.
