Dr. Julia Hines (Muldrow) Harris

Julia Mae (Hines) Muldrow Harris, 72, quietly entered into her eternal rest on June 17, 2013. She was born October 20, 1940 in York, PA to the late Julius and Martha (Sellers) Hines. She received her formal education in the School District of the City of York and was a 1958 graduate of the William Penn Senior High School. Having a desire to further her education, she attended Cheyney State University graduating in 1962. Shortly after graduating, she began her teaching career at Ferguson Elementary. She eventually taught reading, elementary education and special education at Ferguson Elementary, Noel Elementary and the Hannah Penn Middle School. Her career in the School District of the City of York included the positions of Guidance Counselor and African American History at William Penn; In addition she served as Assistant Principal at Hannah Penn Middle School, Principal at Lincoln Elementary and E.F. Smith Middle Schools. From 1991 until her retirement in 2001, she served as Assistant to the Superintendent for Secondary Education for the School District of the City of York. During her career, she also earned her Master’s Degree from Millersville University and her Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1964, she married her childhood sweetheart, Richard Muldrow and from this union two sons were born, Richard, Jr. and Julius. At an early age, Julia accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and she joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church where she was very active in the church and served as pianist for the choir. In 2001, Julia was ordained a minister at the Shiloh Baptist Church under the tenure of Rev. William Curtis. She was a founding member of the Open Door Christian Fellowship and joined the Cornerstone Baptist Church in 2011. Julia was an active member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and “Sistahs Can We Read” book club. She also volunteered her time on numerous boards and committees thought the City of York. York City Human Relations Commission, Police Civil Service Commission, Community Advisory Board, Crispus Attucks Community Center Board of Directors, York Hospital Corporate Board of Directors, The United Way, Penn Laurel Girl Scout Council, Salvation Army, YMCA, YWCA, Lincoln Elementary/Helen Thackston Charter School board and the College Avenue Senior Citizens to name a few. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a grandson, Douglas Muldrow. She leaves to cherish her memories, two sons, Richard Muldrow, Jr., wife Deitra, and Julius Muldrow, both of York, a grandson, Richard Muldrow, III and a granddaughter, Danara Muldrow and a host of family spread across Pennsylvania and the United States. A visitation will be held Friday, June 28, 2013 from 9 until 11 a.m. followed by a celebration of life at William Penn Senior High School, 101 West College Avenue, York, Pa 17401 (please use College Avenue Entrance) with the Rev. Mark K. Kearse of Cornerstone Baptist church officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Cornerstone Baptist church or the Dr. Julia Mae Hines Harris Educational Trust Fund, York Educational FCU, 1601 South Queen Street, York, PA 17403.
