Betty Purvis Obituary

Betty Bowen Purvis, age 86, passed away peacefully May 16, 2019 at Holmes Regional Medical Center. A longtime resident of Indian Harbour Beach, her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Betty had touched in some way throughout her life. Betty was born in November of 1932 in Birmingham, AL to Edward “Big Daddy” Luttrell and Molly “Bobby” Luttrell. She grew up in the Birmingham area where her parents owned and operated a basket factory and held weekly Southern Sunday brunches after church for the whole community to attend. When she left Alabama, she traveled far and wide, living in such places as Florida, California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Australia and even Fiji. Betty was always a busy woman, working, raising children, being social, and staying involved in her local community and neighborhood associations. She treasured her family and friends first and foremost. She especially prized her role as “Nanny” to both her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a vivacious personality and a knack for making those around her cheerful. One of Betty’s main passions was being active – she was an avid tennis player and enthusiastic park walker up until her 80’s. She loved to dance and especially enjoyed learning new dance moves from her granddaughters. She had many other interests including travel, politics, history, reading, and playing bridge. She found great love and devotion when she met her husband, Richard Purvis of Lake Wales, FL in the 1990’s. Richard and Betty met on the dancefloor, no doubt as a result of the aforementioned dance moves. Their eyes, hearts, and feet met, and they were inseparable ever since. Betty was preceded in death by her daughter, Pamela Leigh Bowen in November of 2018. She is survived by her husband Richard Purvis, her two children Donald Frank Bowen and Kimberly Renee Courteau, and her nephew Rick Luttrell. She also leaves behind two granddaughters, Carleigh Courteau-Bush and Molly Stevens, as well as three great-grand daughters, Isabelle, Samantha, and Sienna. She also had great love for her husband’s son, William Purvis and his wife Brandi as well as their twin children, Ben and Meghan. She was a strong, determined, and fiercely independent woman. To the benefit of her daughters, granddaughters, and great granddaughters, she proudly instilled these values within them. Please join us in celebrating her life Saturday morning June 1, 2019 between 10:00 a.m. – 12 noon at Beach Funeral Home East, 1689 South Patrick Drive, Indian Harbour Beach. Lunch and drinks immediately afterwards in a private room at River Rocks, 6485 South, US-1, Rockledge, FL 32955
