Stephen Kent HutchensStephen Kent Hutchens, 69, of Arkansas City, passed away Friday (March 1, 2019) at the South Central Kansas Medical Center of Arkansas City. Memorial services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday (March 30, 2019) at the Church of Christ of Arkansas City. Cremation has been effected. Stephen was born October 10, 1949, in Wichita, to Francis Kent and Ellen Jane (Burnette) Hutchens. He was one of three children. While living in Wichita, he attended Sunnyside Elementary School, Roosevelt Junior High, and graduated from East High School in 1967. He was a member of the swim team and drama club landing a leading role dancing as “Jed” in the dream scene of the musical “Oklahoma”. He was also a member of the Scarlet Lancers in the drum and bugle corps. After graduation he attended Wichita State University majoring in general studies and music, he later completed his education graduating with a degree in industrial education in 1982. Stephen also attended Friends University majoring in music and art. He worked for USD 250 (Wichita) while attending college. Stephen and his first wife lived in Wellington and had two daughters. They were later divorced. Stephen moved to Arkansas City where he met Sherrylyn Crouse. The couple married on September 7, 1990, in Winfield. He worked for the General Electric Jet Engine Maintenance Facility at Strother Field and Winfield for a total of 28 years, until his retirement in 2009. Stephen was a member of the Church of Christ and helped with the custodial duties. He enjoyed playing pitch at the Arkansas City Senior Citizens Center every Tuesday evening, listening to music and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Sherrylyn of the home; three daughters Kate Hutchens of Wichita, Kira and husband Neil Lake of Wellington, Ashley Lind of Arkansas City; sister Jo Ellen and husband Jim McPheeters of Excelsior Springs, Missouri; a brother Curt and wife Marguerite Hutchens of Valley Center; nephews Clayton and wife Mindy McPheeters, Casey and wife Lyndse McPheeters; a niece Colonsay and husband Darin Selby; grandchildren Fin and Margot Lake and Wyatt Dull. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial has been established with the Arkansas City Church of Christ. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
