Robert (Bob) Daryl Straszheim died on October 20, 2018 of natural causes at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center in Shell Rock following earlier battles with lymphoma and prostate cancer. He was born on August 14, 1931 in Columbus, Ohio. He was the second child born to Robert Edward and Clara Belle (Shepherd) Straszheim. They moved to West Lafayette, Indiana a couple years later where three younger siblings were born. Robert grew up there and graduated from West High School in 1949. He went on to study mechanical engineering at Purdue University where he got his bachelor's degree in 1953. He went to work for Standard Oil of Indiana in Gary and got involved with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). He married Eleanor Jane Lahr in July 1954. In December of 1955, they moved to Waterloo, Iowa where Robert started a job at the John Deere Product Engineering Center. In 1972 they moved to Hudson, Iowa where all their four children graduated from high school. He and Eleanor then moved to Waverly Iowa. He retired from John Deere in 1982 but continued working with them for several years as a consultant. Bob enjoyed tinkering in his workshop. He built his own garden tractors and tillers, his own camper, and multiple furnishings for the home. It was rare that he found something that he wouldn't try to fix or build. He was also a gentleman farmer and had occasion to repair many implements. In later years, he took to following NASCAR and working Sudoku puzzles. He was member of and active in Heritage United Methodist, Lions, and PTOS (Preserving The Old Stuff). He and Eleanor hosted a number of foreign exchange students over the years in both Hudson and Waverly. He was preceded in death by his parents, a younger brother Mahlon, and an older sister Carolyn Joanne Widiger. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, younger sister Karen Webster (GA), younger brother Donald (CA), his four children Warren (and Karen) of Story City, Dale of Waverly, Karla (and Ardie) of Waverly, and Daryl of Gilbert Arizona, four grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Friday October 26th at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Funeral services will be at 11 AM on Saturday, October 27th at Heritage United Methodist on Highway 3 west of Waverly. A burial service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery and lunch will follow at the church. Memorials may be made to Heritage United Methodist Church, Lions, or to the Relay for Life.
