Edward "Ed" Brice Obituary

Edward ‘Ed’ Brice, age 79 of Boone, died June 14, 2018 at the Boone County Hospital. A Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., at the Church of the Sacred Heart, with Rev. James Bruch officiating. Following the service, Ed will be cremated. Burial of his cremains will be held at a later date. Edward Francis Brice, was born in Boone, Iowa on June 11, 1939, the son of James and Edna (Dailey) Brice. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Boone in 1957 and in 1962, enlisted and served, with the United States Air Force until 1968 when he was discharged. While in the Air Force, Ed completed courses in electronics. On May 14, 1966, Edward married Charlene Kruse in Boone, Iowa. In earlier years, Ed worked for McDonald Aircraft and then, Monsanto in the ‘LED’ Division, both companies in St. Louis, Missouri. Ed received his BS Degree in Applied Physics from the University of Missouri in 1972, and worked for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas. Ed returned to Boone where he started and managed his own business, ‘Brice Engineering’, from 1973 to 1984. His last employment was in Ames, working for the Department of Agriculture at the National Animal Disease Lab, where he retired in 2006. Ed was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart, served as President of the Parish Council, and was a member and Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Leo Council #814. In earlier years, Ed was very involved with the Little League program in Boone, volunteering as an umpire and earning the name of ‘Umpire Ed’. He enjoyed playing golf, watching sports on television, and loved ‘intellectual and stimulating’ conversation with his brothers. Ed was very proud of his daughter’s academic accomplishments and he never missed their sporting, music, and drama activities and events. Ed’s last years were difficult for him due to his failing health, missing the things he enjoyed and loved to do. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Patrick Brice; a sister, Alice Lowe, a brother-in-law, Richard Bechtel, a nephew, Michael Bechtel. Ed is survived by a by his wife, Charlene of Boone; three daughters, Jennifer Brice of Ames, Kathleen Brice and fiancé Deric Townsend of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Julie Brice and fiancé Russ Farris of Fort Mill, South Carolina; a granddaughter Suki Brice-Townsend; four brothers, Bob (Linda) Brice of Urbandale, Don (Gale) Brice of Ames, Earl (Sue) Brice of Hutchinson, Minnesota, and Tom Brice of Coralville; a sister Patty Brice of Des Moines; many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall, on Monday from 4 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m. and a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, friends may call at the funeral chapel from 8 until 10:30 a.m. In memory of Ed, memorials may be directed to the family.
