Retired U.S. Army Colonel Maury L. "Sonny" Jones Obituary

*****SERVICE DAY CHANGE*****

Retired U.S. Army Colonel Maury L. “Sonny” Jones of Huntsville, Alabama, surrounded by family, peacefully passed away March 26, 2024, at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his father, Maury Daniel and mother, Patsy “Pat” Lyons Jones. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jacquelyn “Jackie”; his children Susan “Kim” Jones of Huntsville, Leigh “Nina” and Jeff Anderson of Huntsville, Leslie and John Martella of Huntsville, and Vivian and Chris Coleman of Huntsville; six grandchildren, Mollie Anderson, Morgan Anderson, Brock Anderson, Garret Buckelew, Turner Coleman, and Landen Coleman; and two great-grandchildren, Luke Johnston and Asher Anderson

He was born in Hardy, Kentucky on February 27, 1933, but moved to central Virginia (Arvonia/New Canton) when he was about six months old. Growing up in central Virginia he grew to love hunting, excelled as a baseball player, and literally grew up across the street from the would-be love of his life, Jackie.

He attended the University of Virginia, where he also excelled playing baseball, before transferring his studies to the University of Omaha in Nebraska where he earned a bachelor’s degree. He later earned a master’s degree from Babson College in Massachusetts.

In the midst of his college days, he entered the US Army and served well over 26 years as a Maintenance Management Officer and Supply and Service Management Officer, achieving the rank of Colonel, before retiring in 1982 at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. During those more than 26 years of service, he served two tours in Vietnam, and distinguished himself earning multiple decorations, including the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star (twice), Army Commendation Medal (twice) and Legion of Merit.

After retiring from the US Army, he continued his Defense service as a contractor working for COLSA in Huntsville until 2008.

In retirement he continued his passion for hunting, especially turkey, watching his grandchildren’s sports and extracurricular events, cheering for the Atlanta Braves, watching Alabama football, and simply spending time with family and friends, his true joy.

Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. on  Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral will follow in the funeral home chapel, immediately followed by a graveside service with military honors at Huntsville Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Family Care.
