Obituary
Audrey Louise Burton
April 25, 1947 – March 27, 2024
Gander, Newfoundland
It is with great sadness that the family of Audrey Burton announce her peaceful passing on March 27, 2024 at James Paton Memorial Health Centre with her family by her side.
Leaving to mourn with loving memories are Gerald, husband of 58 years, children Connie and Jeff (Julia), and grandchildren Matthew (Megan), Allison (Sheldon), and Eric. She is also survived by siblings Joan (Tom), Shirley (Joe), David (Christine), and Helen (Carl), brother-in-law Gus (Betty), as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and cherished friends. She is predeceased by her parents, Sydney and Phyllis Boyde.
Born and raised in Twillingate, Audrey treasured her childhood surrounded by love, growing up as the second eldest among five siblings. Her upbringing was grounded in the values of family and community that defined life in Twillingate in the 1950s and 60s.
Married in 1966, Audrey and her husband, Gerald, relocated to the small mining town of Gull Pond, where they spent six years before eventually settling in Gander in 1972. Audrey worked for several years as a switchboard operator with Canadian National Telecommunications, leaving in the mid 70s to raise her two young children. She later returned to school, ultimately dedicating the remainder of her career as a clerk at James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre.
Audrey's legacy is one of kindness and compassion. She was always welcoming to visitors, ever ready for a friendly conversation, and deeply attentive to the needs of her family, particularly her beloved grandchildren. Despite residing in Gander for 52 years, she held onto her roots, returning to Twillingate every summer to spend time at the family cabin.
Visitation will take place at Stacey’s Funeral Home, Gander on Friday, March 29th from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm. A memorial service will be held at the Fraser Road United Church on Saturday, March 30, at 2pm. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Audrey’s life.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Audrey’s memory may be made to the Fraser Road United Church.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the nurses who tended to Audrey’s daily care at home, and the doctors, nurses, and staff at the James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre in Gander, who cared for her in her final days.
