James Charles Joy Obituary

In Loving Memory of Jim Joy

James “Jimmy” Joy a cherished husband, father, grandfather, coach, mentor, and friend, passed away on 3/23/2024 at 88, leaving behind a profound legacy of inspiration and guidance. He touched the lives of countless individuals, instilling values of dedication, perseverance, and kindness.

Born on 6/13/1935 in St. Catharines, Ontario, Jimmy devoted his life to empowering others through his passion for the beautiful sport of rowing. His accomplishments in the sport are many, but to name a few…Jimmy served as High Performance Director for Rowing Canada in the 1980s and consulted with the National Programs for Israel, Italy and Japan. He proudly coached at MIT, University of Western Ontario, Yale, Wesleyan and Hobart & William Smith Colleges. Famously co-founded Craftsbury Sculling Camp, the first of its kind in North America. One of his most cherished locales, Craftsbury continues to operate as one of the most definitive training locations and experiences for scullers worldwide. His impact was felt from beginner to the Olympic level and in 2018 he was awarded the US Rowing Medal of Honor.

Jimmy was known not only for his expertise in rowing, but also for his ability to see the potential in each individual he coached or mentored. He inspired others to push beyond their limits, encouraging them to reach for their dreams with unwavering determination. He believed completely in the power of mentorship and cultivated a supportive environment where athletes and mentees could thrive both on and off the water.

His belief in the importance of the coach’s role led him to create The Joy of Sculling Coaching Conferences. For over thirty years, these conferences brought together the rowing community and were the most complete and technical conferences available. The true measure of Jimmy’s impact lies in the countless lives he touched and the lasting relationships he forged. Former athletes fondly remember his lessons and words of encouragement during challenging times and the life lessons imparted through his coaching.

Jimmy is survived by his devoted wife of almost 58 years, Cecilia “Cele” Joy, his daughters Chris, Kathleen, Alicia (Sheila Rabideaux), his grandchildren Bea and Gus, as well as by the countless athletes, friends and colleagues whose lives he touched and influenced.

While Jimmy may no longer be with us in person, his legacy of leadership, determination, and mentorship will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have known him.

In lieu of flowers, Jimmy would love for you to treat yourself to a strawberry milkshake and take the time to hug your favorite tree. There will be no services at this time, but more to come on future ways we’ll honor Jimmy’s legacy. In addition, the family hopes you’ll share your memories of him here: https://tinyurl.com/JimJoy.
