Galen Norvin Buck Obituary

Galen Norvin Buck – Adventurer – Lived Large from October 1st, 1936, to March 23rd, 2024.

Galen Norvin Buck passed away peacefully March 23, 2023.

Galen was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to NE and Geraldine Buck. They moved to Washington in 1943 settling in Tacoma where Galen attended school and gained a passion for horses, riding in parades, horse shows and daily rides around the Fort Lewis Reservation. He enjoyed perfecting his rodeo skills, riding and roping and I think a little steer wrestling. His brother Gary remembers, He was pretty good with a bullwhip too. He tried his luck at riding a steer in a rodeo but it only lasted a couple seconds.

In 1952 the family moved to Spokane where Galen attended Central Valley High School where he met the love of his life Marilyn Hedrick. Marilyn also rode horses and together they ride around Spokane Valley. Galen graduated from Central Valley in 1955 and immediately went to work for General Electric (Battelle) in Richland WA. Battelle was his only employer for until he retired in 1995. He married Marilyn in 1956 and they moved to Richland where they raised their 5 children, Cary, Tim, Gale, Corky and Pete.

Galen had many adventures throughout his lifetime, he experienced a world of adventures through his love for reading and the many books he collected. He had adventures alongside authors such as Theadore Roosevelt in African Game Trails. He would read aloud to his kids of the adventures from Henry A. Shute 1st edition book of “The Real Diary of a Real Boy”.

Together with Marilyn they created many adventures through travel and their shared interests in each other’s dreams and hobbies such as quilt and sewing fairs, gun and knife shows and peaceful days at Newman Lake.

He had many hobbies; knifes - collecting, sharpening, and throwing. - Primitive Rendezvous enactment portraying the Mountain man that goes by the name “Deeptrack” and everything that went with it, teepees, leathers, moccasins, muzzleloader shooting and passin a jug of homemade around the campfire. - Hunting: He loved hunting and pursued his game in every method available, Archery, Modern Rifle, Muzzleloader, and Pistol. He would go hunting as often as he could and camp in the Blue Mountains from early September through October as well as weekend trips in the late seasons into January. Many lifelong friends (hunting partners) were formed through hunting.

He was a competitor. Every hobby he had was a competition to be the best. Archery golf, Archery indoor target shooting, throwing knives and tomahawks or anything that would stick into stump, tree or door. He competed in the NRA National Pistol Competition and placed in the amateur class. He competed locally for 25 years at the Pasco Pistol range.

He was a Mason of the 33rd degree. Fortitude, Prudence, Temperance, and Justice.

Galen will be remembered for his outgoing personality, a friend to everyone he met with a big smile and a boisterous laugh. He would sing funny songs, tell dirty jokes and play his concertina while laying flat on his back in his little Hillbilly trailer during hunting trips in the Blues. He loved the mountains and would be fully content to just sit under a tree during opening day of any season and take a little snooze. He always said that if he was to pass away in the mountains, just “collect my guns and leave me there.”

Galen was proceeded in death by the most notable adventure of his life, his only love of 67 years Marilyn Rae Buck, his first daughter, Cary Lee Buck and son Gale Buck (Renae). He is survived by his children Tim Buck (Lisa), Corky Clark (Mark), and Pete Buck (Sandy).

Galen and Marilyn will be together forever in eternity, as their ashes will be co-mingled and placed in a niche under the Christ Statue on the Forest Lawn located at Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Kennewick.

There will be a celebration of Galen’s life, April 21st from 3pm to 5pm at the CG Public House located at 9221 W Clearwater Ave. Kennewick WA 99336
