David Winfred Bister Obituary

Underhill, VT - David Winfred Bister, 70, passed away on March 25th, 2024 after a two year battle with cancer at the McClure Miller Respite Home in Colchester.

He was born on June 19, 1953 in Burlington, Vermont to George Bister and Barbara (Sheriff) Bister, the second of seven children. He grew up in Jericho and Essex and attended Mount Mansfield Union High School. He graduated from the Franklin Institute in Boston with a trade certificate in Automotive Technology in 1973.

David had a long career in sheet metal management and project estimation. He started at Vermont Heating and Ventilating in the 70s and continued at Chuck’s, New England Air Systems and Tri-Angle Metal Fabricators, where he retired. He was proud of his work in sheet metal and the relationships, business and personal, he forged in his career.

David’s hobbies included hunting and fishing, working on cars, listening to and playing rock and roll and metal music, feeding and watching the wildlife surrounding his home, working outdoors with friends chopping wood, and spending time with those he cared about. Later in life he picked up an amateur hobby of wildlife photography which brought him a lot of joy. David got the most pleasure out of life helping people and being able to take care of things for others.

We will miss spending time with him in his home in Underhill, going to all his haunts to visit old friends and listening to the stories of growing up in Chittenden County, which he never ran out of.

He leaves his son Adam Bister, daughter-in-law Caetlin Bister, a step-daughter Tracie Kernen, a brother, George Bister and wife Brenda Bister, four sisters, Donna Bister and husband Marc Estrin, Rebecca Bates and husband Bob Bates, Jean Weber and husband Paul Weber, Monica Dattilio and husband Jim Dattilio, and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brother Paul and parents George and Barbara.

Our family would like to send our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful nursing staff and oncology and surgical team at UVM Medical Center and the caregivers at McClure Miller Respite Home for treating David like family and providing bright, cheerful spots in some of his darkest days. We would also like to specially acknowledge David’s ex-wife, Debora Sourdiff, for everything she did for David in his illness. You truly were an angel for him.

Per David’s request, there will be no services held at this time. The family invites you to share your memories and condolences by visiting www.awrfh.com.
