Obituary

Oweter Winn was born in Bunkie, Louisiana, on January 31, 1934. She was the oldest of thirteen children born to the late Willie Battiest and Jessie May Smith. She entered holy matrimony with Leo Winn on January 5, 1954, and seven children were born to this union. They relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, where she was a dedicated wife and homemaker.

Her most cherished achievement and joy was becoming a mother and the ultimate nurturer to many beyond her immediate family. She also became the legal guardian but more of a bonus mother as she lovingly cared for her two nephews and niece, the late Malcolm Smith, Abraham Smith, and Tushonie Smith.

As a faith-filled believer, Oweter gave her life to Christ at an early age. After her husband passed at a young age and was memorialized at Saint John Missionary Baptist Church, Oweter united with the church and has been a member for over 40 years. She exuded a nurturing spirit and the love of a child of God. She was affectionately known as Sister Winn to her church family, and her faith and dedication to Christ at an early age were the most significant parts of her life as an individual. She served on several auxiliaries in the church, including the Pastor's Aid, missionaries, and a few choirs throughout the years.

The world looked so much brighter behind the smile. She loved to cook and eventually began teaching the children she nurtured. To her close friends, she was known as Weeta, a fantastic listener to anyone who needed it, ready to share sound advice with a comforting demeanor that made others feel heard, seen, and acknowledged.

Weeta represented faultlessly her best attributes were the limitless size and room in her heart. No matter what was happening, her smile catalyzed joy, happiness, and inspiration in others. Despite facing challenges early in life, she never stopped pursuing her dreams. Another of her most outstanding achievements was learning to read and write later in life, a journey showcasing her commitment to personal growth and education for not only herself but all those she nurtured.

She was affectionately known as a "grandmother to all," extending her love, care, and wisdom to everyone she met and was lovingly called Nana. Her nurturing nature and compassionate spirit touched the lives of countless individuals, leaving a lasting impact on her community. Oweter Winn departed this life on March 15, 2024, at home peacefully in her sleep.

When someone you love becomes a memory, the memories of that person become a treasure. May her memories of laughter and passion for life give you strength and comfort while knowing the love she shared with each of you. As you cherish your memories of Oweter Winn, she will live on.
