Gerald Matthews Obituary

Gerald Matthews

July 25, 1936 – March 25, 2024

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family of the late Gerald Matthews of Paradise, formerly of Labrador City, announce his passing at the Miller Centre in St. John’s on March 25, 2024 with his family by his side. Gerald was born in Badger, NL on July 25, 1936. He then moved to Gambo and later Glovertown, where he grew up. He moved to Labrador City in 1974 and worked at the Iron Ore Company of Canada until his retirement in 1999.

He is predeceased by his son, Darren Matthews, his parents, Arthur & Emma (Bursey) Matthews; sisters Dorothy Davis, Daphne Wagg, Evelyn Sparks, Virtue Budgell, Margaret Matthews and Marjorie Fostor; brothers Sidney Matthews and baby Clifford Matthews.

Leaving to mourn is his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Matthews; daughter, Brenda (Carl) Drover; sons, Tony (Sandra) Matthews, Donnie (Vanessa Smith) Matthews; Grandchildren, Jeffrey (Kimberly Haskell) Drover, Michael (Carissa) MacDonald, Lori-Lynn (Bradley) Brazil, Madison Matthews, Marcus Matthews and Mackenzie Matthews; Great Grandchildren, Nate Brazill, Noah Brazill, Ellis Drover and Carly Brazill, sisters Harriett (Larry) Lane, Marion Legge (Harold Batt), along with a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

In his earlier days, he loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and spending time at his cabin with family and friends. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren, who were the highlight of his life. He was a respectful elder of the church and the unofficial distributor of Johnny Stea Sausages in Labrador West.

Everyone who met Gerald enjoyed his company, enjoyed his outlook on life and very much enjoyed being in his presence, even the victims of his endless practical jokes. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Family will be accepting friends at Stacey’s Funeral Home, Gander on Wednesday, March 27th from 2:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. – 9:00 P.M. Funeral service will take place at Evangel Pentecostal Church, Gander on Thursday, March 28th at 11:00 A.M. with Pastors Gary Andrews and Lindsey Foster officiating. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery.

Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Gerald’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 500-55 St. Clair Ave West, Toronto, ON M4V 2Y7 or Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, 835 Topsail Road, Unit 107, Mount Pearl, NL. A1N 3J6
