Betty Lou Kelley Obituary

Betty L. Kelley passed away March 12, 2024. Betty was born in Sunnyside, Washington on January 9, 1935, to Edgar A. Taylor and Mabel (Crowner) Taylor. Betty’s parents passed away when she was nine years old, and her grandmother raised her and her twin sister until she passed. 


Betty graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1953. Betty met the love of her life, Roy C. Kelley, during her high school years. In 1953 Betty and Roy married and moved to Montgomery, Alabama where Roy was enlisted at Maxwell Air Force Base. In June 1955, they had their son John “Mitchell” Kelley. Roy and Betty returned to the Yakima Valley later that same year. 


In 1959, Roy and Betty moved to the Tri-Cities, where they would live during their 62 years of marriage. Roy and Betty had their daughter, Carol Lynn Kelley, in February 1962. At that time, Betty was working for the Pasco Chamber of Commerce and while working for the commerce, she had the opportunity to work at the Seattle World’s Fair. Shortly after that she went to work out in the area, and worked at Hanford until she retired in 1995. 


Betty and Roy enjoyed traveling on their motorcycles, spending holidays at the sand dunes on the Oregon Coast and in the mountains near Naches with family and their friends. Roy always enjoying his motor toys and Betty playing games, having adventures of her own with the girls. Betty over the years enjoyed sewing, crafting, playing games, and watching football and her Mariners.


Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Roy C. Kelley, son, John Mitchell Kelley, her parents, Edgar and Mabel Taylor, brothers, Tom and John Taylor. Betty is survived by her daughter Carol Lynn Hakkinen; grandchildren, Kelley (and Tom) Gravenslund Lachmann, Travis “TJ” Hancock, Jennifer (and Derek) Schmitt, Gerry (and Sara) Kelley, Sean Kelley; and great children, Paislee, Teagan, Sawyer, Nora, Kai and Avery; and sister, Peggy Hamrick.
