Darryl Matthew “Matt” Herndon, 42, of Mount Airy, MD passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, March 22, 2024.  Matt was the loving husband of Diane Elizabeth (Ogg) Herndon and father of Aubrey Jean and Matthew William. 

Matt was born on May 16, 1981 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, MD to Darryl Max  (deceased) and Dana Lu (Hines) Herndon.  He is survived by his sister Dara Harrison and husband Jason, brother-in-law Denny Ogg, and wife Kristi, and nieces and nephews Olivia, Evie, and Maverick Harrison, and Delaney and Dalen Ogg.

Matt graduated from Urbana High School’s first graduating class in 1999.  While in high school, he attended Frederick County’s Career and Technology Center where he learned the electrical trade.  He attended Associated Building Contractors (ABC) in Hagerstown, MD to further his education in the trade.  Matt went on to work for Chugach Alaska Corporation at the National Geospatial (Intelligence) Agency in Bethesda, MD.  He was later hired by the Agency and worked as a facilities engineer at its new location in Springfield, VA.   While there, he had the opportunity to fly over numerous defense facilities, including the Pentagon, and to travel to Germany in support of the war effort in Ukraine. 

Matt was a generous-hearted man who loved the chance to help his family and friends.  He loved all things Carhartt, Chevrolet, and model trains. These things were only surpassed by his love for his wife and children.  He supported them in their school, FFA, and 4-H endeavors.  Known to many as “The General”, Matt never met a stranger; he could start a conversation with anyone and make them feel welcome.  His laughter was contagious; he brightened every moment you shared with him. 

The family will receive friends and family on Wednesday, March 27th, from 2- 4 and 6 to 8pm at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, in Damascus, MD. 

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, March 28th, at the First Baptist Church of Monrovia, 11402 Ridge Lane, Monrovia, Maryland 21770.  There will be a brief viewing  starting at 10:00 am. until service time.

Interment will follow in Howard Chapel Cemetery, Long Corner, Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you check in with friends and loved ones often; do something for someone else, just because.  That is what Matt would have done.
