Gerhard H. “Gary” Kohn, 80


Gerhard H. "Gary” Kohn, 80 of Ashland passed away on Sunday morning, March 24, 2024 in LifeCare Hospice of Wooster.


He was born October 7, 1944 in Zachen, Germany the son of the late Conrad Hugo Walter and Margarete Martha Elisabeth (nee Schwandt) Kohn.


Gary immigrated to the United States on November 17, 1956. He became a citizen the same year he graduated from Ashland High School, Class of 1962. Gary proudly served in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge, he served in the Ohio National Guard from 1976 to 1995. In his retirement years, Gary served on the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard, a group of gentlemen and ladies that pay tribute to honorably discharged veterans at their time of passing.


He married the love of his life, the former Darleen Sue Reich on October 3, 1965.


Gary retired after more than 20 years from Abbott Laboratories in 2005. Along with working his daytime job, Gary owned his own company doing home remodeling and repairs from 1978 to 2015.


He is survived by one son, Kevin (Chong Hui) Kohn of Ashland; two grandchildren, Michael Kohn and Julie (Logan) Fortney of Grandview Heights; his brother, Guenter Franz Albert Kohn of Gold Canyon, Arizona; a sister-in-law, Geisla Kohn of Cuyahoga Falls; and a brother-in-law, Dick (Lenora) Reich of Ashland.


In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Mrs. Darleen Kohn who passed away on February 21, 2022; and a brother, Walter Helmut Kohn.


Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 29, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Rich Pate presiding. The Ashland Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full military honors. Friends may call one hour prior to the service from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A meal and time of fellowship will follow in the Legacy Room of the funeral home. Interment will take place at a later date in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Ashland Veterans Honor Guard or LifeCare Hospice.
