Raymond G. Barber Obituary

Raymond G. Barber of Java, NY passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at his residence at the age of 89.


He was born on September 24, 1934 in Java Village and was a son of the late George and Florence (Williams) Barber. He had worked as a Patrolman for National Fuel in Arcade and Java for 30 years. Ray was also a United States Navy Korean War Veteran and served from 1952-1956. He was also a past Commander (1967-1969) and member of the Six Star Post in Strykersville for 57 years.


Ray was a member of the Java Village Baptist Church, a member and founder of the Wyoming County Sheriff's Posse Search and Rescue and a member of the North-South Skirmish Association. He was also a Town Historian for Java for 40 years and a Wyoming County Historian from 1999-2002, was a former Constable for the Town of Java and had worked at multiple Civil War sites when he was living in North Carolina. He was also a member of the Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge #263 in Java Village.


Raymond is survived by his wife, Joan (Woolley) Barber, whom he married on July 4, 1953 in Curriers, NY and his brother, David (Mary) Barber of Stanley, NY. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.


There will be no prior visitation. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 11am at the Java Village Baptist Church, 4552 Rt. 78 Main Street, Java Village, NY 14083 with Pastor J. Michael Nace officiating. Interment will immediately follow with military honors in the Java Village Cemetery.
