Shirley Ruth Shimp Obituary

It is with great sadness that our dear Shirley “Shirl” Ruth Shimp (Ulrich) passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 in the Reading Hospital. She was the wife of Anthony “Twak” Shimp, they celebrated 32 years of marriage.

Born in Reading, PA, she was the daughter of Irvin and Pearl Urlich (Moyer) and sister to 8 siblings.

Throughout her life, she was always active. She worked at several different jobs, and while raising a family, Shirl owned and was chef at The Dutch Cookery in Birdsboro, PA. But of all, she would say her 20+ years at Progressive Electric were her favorite. They treated her like royalty.

Shirl loved cooking feeding her family, gardening, singing and dancing. Music was always playing where she was. She was particularly famous for her Cheesecake, which her mother taught her to make and she was also taught at a very young age by her father how to hunt for Morel Mushrooms. She couldn't wait to get in the woods each spring and celebrate her haul with a picnic for the occasion. Shirl loved playing bean bag, you wanted her on your team because she was always the best! Regularly chasing a game of chance at The Peak, PA lottery tickets, or a casino, she was always ready to win. Above all, she loved being with her family and friends and bringing people together.

Left to treasure her memory are her husband, Twak; sons: Jeffery Kondrath, Mark Kondrath, D. Scott Katzin, husband of Tammy; Todd Shimp, husband of Tami; daughters: Constance Ludwig, and Krystal King. Also, step-children: Barry, and Rick Katzin; grandchildren: Tiffany Mohr, Nicholas Ludwig, Karissa Avey (King) Jacob, Kevin Kondrath, Paul, Charlie, and Johnny Shimp; great grandchildren: Dalton Mohr, Cameron, and Hudson Avey.

Shirl was predeceased by son Andrew Kondrath; son in law, Stephen King; step children: Jeff, Rob, and Brenda Katzin, and all siblings.

Shirl loved all her family, friends and neighbors. She was the kind of person who took the time to get to know you. She was beloved by everyone. No matter when or where you met her you would always remember her.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 29, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Kuhn Funeral Home, West Reading. A time of sharing will follow at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be private at the Fort Indiantown Gap in early April.
