Alex and Nellie Dergousoff Obituary

Mrs. Nellie Alice Lavaden Dergousoff passed away April 24, 2022 at the age of 83. Nellie was born on May 4th, 1938 to Fred and Bertha Hagemeister in Preeceville. She was the 2nd eldest of a family of five. Nellie attended Waler Country School until grade 8. She helped her mother on the farm until the age of 18. She then went to Kitimat, BC for 3 months, working as a house cleaner. She then had to come home to help on the family farm as her brother, Tommy became very ill. Her mother was away in hospital for one year helping with Tommy’s care. She later went to Calgary to take a hair dressing course and worked from optical store. Nellie came home and worked for the Roste, Jaques and Kardynal families hauling grain, milking cows and cooking. She also cooked one winter at a lumber camp for the Dolton family and Burch family at Carberry Manitoba.

Mr. Alex Dergousoff passed away January 1, 2024 at the age of 92. Alex was born May 27, 1931, to Wasyl and May (nee Kalmakoff) Dergousoff on the family farm south west of Dernic. He was the 3rd oldest of a family of six. Alex attended Dernic School until grade 8. He worked cleaning the elevator, farmed with his father and lended a helping hand to neighbours when in need. He worked one winter for a drilling company in Alberta. Alex was an avid hunter.

Alex and Nellie met in 1959 at a dance in Hazel Dell. They married in 1963 living on the family farm south of Dernic. On June 17, 1969, their first daughter (Ronnell) was born. Also, in 1969, Alex and Nellie bought 3 quarters of land from Nellie’s father and moved to Preeceville. In 1970, Alex’s father came and lived with them in Preeceville. In 1972 their second daughter (April) was born. Alex and Nellie worked hard at farming and raising cattle. Nellie always planted a large and beautiful vegetable and flower garden which kept her busy canning. Nellie was always picking wild berries and making different kinds of jam. Home-made bread and buns were made often. Alex and Nellie were avid curlers and Nellie was a 4-H leader in Buchanan. Their door was always open for family, friends and neighbours to drop by for a cup of tea, fresh bread and desserts. In 1995, they sold the family farm, purchased the Mitchell farm and renovated Nellie’s parents house in town. In 2017, Alex suffered a stroke. Nellie was able to care for Alex at home until she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2021. Alex made his home at Preeceville Long Term Care. Nellie briefly joined Alex at Long Term Care until her passing on April 24, 2022.
