Laura Annie Steele Brown, 94, passed to the presence of God on March 8,2024 at the Maine Vets Home in Machias, surrounded by family and loving care givers. She was born on April 13, 1929 to Charles and Annie " Bessie" (Sullivan) Steele in Wallace Nova Scotia Canada,the seventh of twelve children.


At age 11 Laura left home after the death of her father to work on a Cape Breton Island sheep farm to help support her younger brothers and sisters. At 14 she returned home and continued to work at various jobs in her hometown area. In 1949 at age 19, Laura accepted a house keeping job with the Cliff Look family in Addison Maine and began a new life in America.


In 1953 she met Llewellyn "Buddy" Brown Jr and on May 15 1953 they were married at the RLDS Church in Jonesport where they were surrounded by friends and family marking the beginning of a new life together.The two worked side by side establishing a family cleaning business providing services throughout Washington County. Much of their time was spent working for the Jonesport Beals School system providing janatorial services. Over the next 35 years the two ,worked hard to support their family , until, Buddy passed in 1987.


After retirement Laura's life continued to be full. She served joyfully at her church, the Community of Christ Church of Jonesport . She enjoyed spending time with friends especially her friendship with Elbridge "Prid" Dowling. They loved keeping an eye on the local birds, traveling the back roads of downest Maine and spending time at camp with Prid's family.



Laura was a cleaning whiz,"whip up a meal quick " cook and selfless in her kindness toward any that needed a place to stay, a meal,or some conversation with a cup of tea. She always cared for others more than herself.


In addition to her parents Laura was predeceased by siblings Stanley, Logan, Anita, Helen, Almon, Robert, Edna, Isabel and Hal, her loving husband Buddy and special in-laws Pop and Florence Brown. A special grandson in law Andre Carrington and infant great grandaughter Caitlyn Nichole Carrington and Laura's special friend Prid Dowling.


Laura is survived by daughter: Alice B Woodward and her husband, Lloyd of Cherryfield, daughter: Susan B Beal and her husband,Obed of Hancock,Son:Allan C Brown and wife, Michelle of Gray.


Grandchildren; Laura Woodward and her fiance Ryan Beal, Bonnie Ewers and husband David, Tori Tibbetts and husband Michael, Crystal Beal and fiance Jared McNally and Alex Beal.


Great grandchildren; Zayden Ewers;Tyler, Jace and Trista Tibbetts;Ivy-Sue and husband Andrew Kaelin, Celine Bean, Rose and Trenton Crowley and Asher Beal. 2 surving sisters ,Marian McLain of Halifax NS and Shirley Steele of Pugwash NS. Special friends Mac and Marian Pottle of Millinockett ,Pam and Chris Smith of Jonesport and Nancy Ackley of Machias.


Recently Laura was asked what meant most to her in life .....Her response " God and my family" ...... what more could we ask.



Laura's time at Machias Vets home was very fulfilling and brought her full circle surrounded by caring staff and friends. They were exceptional in her care and the family askes that in lieu of flowers to please make a donation in her memory to the Maine Vetrans Home of Machias 32 Vetrans Way ,Machias Maine 04654. Also special thanks to Beacon Hospice of Bangor.


In respect for Laura's wishes a private graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetary in the spring of 2024 with Sharon Church officiating.
