Obituary
Richard LaClair BeGell, Jr., age 94 of Corning, New York passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2024 at home. He was born on April 2, 1929 in Corning, New York to Richard and Adelma (Case) BeGell. Richard was a graduate of Northside High School. He married Vera Marie Wetmore on July 15, 1950 at Grace Methodist Church in Corning. He was predeceased by Vera Marie on August 3, 2017.
He was employed by Corning Glass Works for 42 years. Dick worked in various departments and retired in 1986, from the Steuben Factory. He supervised gatherers, gaffers, polishers, and engravers in the Steuben blowing room and he signed finished Steuben pieces or rejected them if flawed. In addition to working for Corning Glass, he had an excavating/contracting business, BeGell & Wilson, General Contractors. He also enjoyed hunting deer and rabbits.
Richard is survived by his three daughters: Janice (Thomas) Wolff of Orchard Park, Nancy (Kenneth) VanEtten of Corning, Priscilla (Michael) McLane of Sewell, NJ; brother: Ronald (Kathy) BeGell; 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Richard was predeceased by his son, Richard LaClair BeGell III, and
his sister, Janet BeGell Wilson.
A private graveside service will be held at Chapel Knoll Cemetery where he will be laid to rest alongside his beloved wife. Carpenter’s Funeral Home has been entrusted with Richard’s final arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s name may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Boys Town charities, which were both organizations that he supported.
