Eugene (Gene) Murphy, Jr 76, of Chattanooga, TN passed away peacefully on Friday, March 15, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.


Born and raised in Gadsden, AL, Eugene was known for his unwavering commitment to his country, his passion for music and love for Alabama football. Gene served with distinction during the Vietnam War with the US Army.


Outside of his military service, Gene had a deep appreciation for music, particularly jazz and playing his bass guitar. He found solace and joy in the soulful melodies of Earth, Wind and Fire whose music served as a soundtrack to many memorable moments throughout his life. His love for music brought him immense happiness and connected him to friends and family alike.


In addition to his love for music, Gene was a devoted fan of Alabama football. He cheered passionately for his beloved team, proudly displaying his team spirit and sharing in the excitement of each victory.


Gene will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for his family. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, whose presence brought warmth and joy to all who knew him.


Eugene is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Sr and Olivia Murphy, wife, Willie Mae Kirk Murphy and granddaughter, Alexis Murphy.


He leaves to cherish his memories, two sons Gene Jelks of Gadsden, Al; Cedric (Tonya) Kirk of Ooltewah, TN; three daughters Audrey Jelks, Danielle Sawyer and Monica Murphy all of Gadsden, Al; four stepchildren, Mary (Freddie) Smith, Johnny Kirk, Jr, Ernestine and Phillip Kirk all of Chattanooga, TN; brother in law, Joe Jefferson; grandchildren, Nikisha, Donte and Kymora Kirk, Antonio and Ashley Jelks, Dawntel Turner, Dequinda, DeArtez and Marthavius Sawyer, Damian Thompson, Ashley and Brandon Murphy; several great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other close family and friends.


Public viewing will be held 9 am - 12 noon Thursday, March 28, 2024, at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, followed by a 12 pm funeral service with Pastor Ernest Jefferson officiating.


Interment: Chattanooga National Cemetery.
