Obituary

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our great friend Joseph L. Taylor, into the vibrational octave of divine love, joy, peace and harmony. His passing occurred on March 11, 2024 with family friends around him and the music of his godson. Joe was 82.

Joe was born March 24, 1941, in Brooklyn, NY to parents Harrison and Helen Taylor. Joe had four siblings. Brother Jack, sisters Carol Wheelock, Jean Garzillo and Cathy Nash. Brother, Jack and sister, Carol proceeded Joe in passing.

Joe graduated in 1959 from Woodbridge (NJ) high school. He was president of his graduating class. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1963 and received a BA degree. Joe also studied at the University of Vienna, Austria. Upon graduating in 1963, Joe entered the Navy and the Vietnam war. He served on a destroyer off the coast of Hanoi as a Lieutenant in an intelligence capacity. Joe left the Navy in 1970 but continued his intelligence work for almost another 30 years. In 1978 Joe met and befriended a 24-year-old UPS driver not long out of college. That friendship led to a business creation and a subsequent business partnership in 1981 that has thrived in a volatile, international environment for more than 43 years. Joe retired from Sofasco, Inc in 2020 as Chairman.

Throughout his life Joe travelled extensively. He had friends in many cities throughout the US, Asia and Europe. In 1990, Joe moved to Winchester, his last stop, coinciding with the move of Sofasco to Winchester from Springfield, VA. He was an iconoclast and a bit of an eccentric, but a modern-day renaissance man. Joe was a great character but was also very kind and generous. He was always ready to help.

Joe was a great teller of stories of his life experiences and loved to host parties in his homes in his younger days. Joe’s Winchester family was the employees of Sofasco, the Frazier’s and the Hethcoat’s and especially the children of the two families who he became “Uncle Joe”. This extended family will miss Uncle Joe dearly.

There will be a private memorial for Joe at the home of Karen and Mike Frazier on April 15th at 5pm.
