Obituary

JUSTINE (BERGEY) GINGRICH

AUG. 30, 1926 – MARCH 17, 2024

Justine and her twin sister Maxine, were born to Allen and Ora (Mobey) Bergey in Bothwell, Ontario on August 30th, 1926. She gained 5 other siblings after Allen remarried, following Ora’s death, when the twins were only 2 years old. Her twin sister, Maxine Legate and one other remaining sister, Marjorie Thompson are still living in the Chatham/Windsor area. She was predeceased by siblings; June (Purcell), Bob Bergey, Joyce (Wright), David Bergey.

Justine married Wayne Gingrich August 27, 1947 and they had two children; Gerald (wife, Jean) and Carol (husband, Dennis), both born in Chatham. Wayne and Justine enjoyed camping, travelling and serving with Disaster Relief in different parts of North America, through MCC. They were faithful and generous members of Wanner Mennonite Church for many years. Justine was a stay-at-home mother until later in life, when she acquired work as a cook for the Fairview Mennonite Home in Cambridge. This would be where she and Wayne lived for many years after their retirement. After Wayne passed away 12 years ago, Justine remained in their little apartment there for several years until she required long-term-care at the Age Care facility in Kitchener.

She enjoyed her family, her beading crafts, her balcony plants, anything sparkly and colourful (except for orange!), and serving guests strawberries and ice cream with a cup of tea. She had a quiet, strong character and a lot of wisdom and common sense to make up for any lack of higher education, which she regretted not having the opportunity for.

Justine will be missed and fondly remembered by her friends and family; sisters, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
