Francis Lecompte Spalding III

1957 - 2024

Francis Lecompte Spalding III, age 66, passed away on March 12, 2024, at his home in Damascus.

Frank was born on July 18, 1957 in Jackson, Wyoming to the late Elizabeth and Francis Lecompte Spalding, Jr.  Frank grew up in Massachusetts, Delaware, and Economy, Nova Scotia before enlisting in the U.S. Navy.  He later married his wife, Cindy Spalding, and they settled in Damascus, Maryland. 

In the Navy, Frank’s service provided him the opportunity to be a leader, build camaraderie, and travel the world, all of which he remembered fondly.  As a Leading Petty Officer of the electronic warfare division on USS Caron, Frank was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal, one of the highest Navy awards any man can achieve in peacetime.  He was extremely proud of his achievement but was not one to boast or openly share.  As Frank transitioned post-military, he continued in career roles involving a combination of people and technology within the medical equipment and computer networking industries. 

Frank loved to be active and participate in sports.  He exceled at golf at an early age, played on several co-ed softball teams, coached youth hockey teams, and was a passionate hockey player for most of his life.  Frank also enjoyed cheering on professional hockey teams.  In his youth, he was an avid collector of hockey cards / autographed pictures of hockey players and followed the Philadelphia Flyers (“Broad Street Bullies”) through their Stanley Cup wins in the 1970’s – to the point where he painted the walls of his bedroom Flyers orange.  As an adult, he became a loyal fan of the Washington Capitals hockey team, though thankfully he never asked to paint any walls Caps red!   

Frank also had a creative, craftsman side.  He took joy in gardening, woodworking, and visiting auctions where he would collect unique items of interest, and then sell or gift his finds.  His creations & collections remain as little treasures. 

Frank’s cornerstones were his ability to remain calm & collected and his congenial manner, sense of humor, and clever wit.  Frank had a calming influence, could relate to anyone (children and adults alike), and always saw the good.  He knew when to speak, how to listen, and enjoyed a good debate and exchange.  He loved to surprise people with unexpected acts of kindness. 

Frank leaves behind a community of family, friends and neighbors who will remember his generosity of spirit, humor, and kindness.  Frank is survived by his wife, Cindy, with whom he shared 33 years of marriage; and brothers Edgar (Kerry) and Edward (Huisheng).  Frank will be deeply missed by his extended family including uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces.

A memorial remembrance is to be announced.

To honor Frank’s memory, consider reaching out to your neighbor: bring them something to say hello, help them with a small (or big) task, or just visit with them for a little while to share a few laughs.  Should you be so inclined, consider donating to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in lieu of flowers.
