Theodore "Ted" Hastel Hughes Obituary

The funeral service for Mr. Ted Hughes, 94, of Oxford, will be at 2 pm on Friday, March 22, 2024, at K.L. Brown Memory Chapel in Golden Springs.  Chaplain Greg Walker and Rev. Zach Van Gieson will officiate.  Entombment will follow at Forestlawn Mausoleum.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.


Mr. Hughes passed away March 18, 2024.


Mr. Hughes was a native of Slocomb, AL.  He served his country with honor in the United States Navy.  He went on to graduate from Jacksonville State University.  Mr. Hughes retired from Alabama Power after over a 26 year career.  He raised his children as a single father and served as a leader in his community.  Mr. Hughes was a member of the Optimus Club, Kiwanis, and Rotary Club.  He was also a member of Lakeview Baptist Church.  


Mr. Hughes is preceded in death by his wife, Martha Hughes; parents, Joseph Henry Hughes and Ethel Izora Coker Hughes;  a brother, Tommy Hughes; three sisters, Retha Mae Hall, Addie Ree Warren, and Glenda Faye Hughes; and two grandchildren, Rusty Clark and Brandi Johnson.


Survivors include his daughters, Rhonda Johnson, Cheryl Clark, and Dee Sculthorpe (Darrell); a son, Michael Hughes (Mary Lynda); grandchildren, Shonda Borden (Joel), Angela Gregoria (James), Skip Clark, Josh Johnson, Amy Sanders (Jason), Sara Hughes, Amber Murphy (Dennis), Justin Kelly, and Tiffany Hughes; eight great grandchildren, Jordan Houck (Trent), Kinsley Gregoria (Adam), Kalee Johnson, Haley Clark, Tristan Angles, Kyleigh Murphy, Heisman Murphy, Everly Kelly; sister, Annette Williams; sister-in-law, Loretta Hughes; and numerous nieces and nephews.


Pallbearers will be Skip Clark, Josh Johnson, Dennis Murphy, Heisman Murphy, Justin Kelly, and James Gregoria.


The family wishes to thank SouthernCare New Beacon Hospice and Home Advantage for the wonderful care they provided and to family and friends for providing emotional support.  A special recognition is given to Chaplain Greg Walker and social worker Stacy Jackson from SouthernCare New Beacon.


Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made in Mr. Hughes' name to a favorite charity.
