Obituary

Gertie passed away at the age of 98 years at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital March 18th, with family at her side. She was born Dec21 1925 to William and Octavius Virgin, in Calabogie, Ontario. Mom was one of several brothers and sisters.

Gertie met the love of her life, Louie Lepere at the end of WW2, while they were both in the army. Gertie moved to Port Arthur, where she and Louie started their adventure. Gertie worked as a waitress, both at the Prince Arthur Hotel, and The Airlane. Mom also had a full career as a custodian with the Lakehead School Board, working at Hillcrest High, and Hammarskjold. She proudly retired in 1989.

Gertie’s focus then turned to her family. She began to babysit her grand kids whenever she could. She loved cooking for her family and friends. Her famous spaghetti and meatballs were a staple every weekend, to whomever came by for supper. She was also known for her many various pies, cakes, cookies and pastries. She continued this passion basically until she was hospitalized in Jan 2024.

After dad died in 1986, mom and daughter Marlene became lifelong companions. They have taken care of each other for the past 37 years. Right to the end, Marlene was vigilant at mom’s bedside at the Regional.

Gertie loved her family, and was very proud of all their accomplishments, and would brag to anyone who listened.

Gertie was predeceased by husband Louie in 1986. She is survived by her 4 children, Frank (Dianna), Bob (Jana), Marlene, Luanne (James). She had 10 grandkids, and 16 great grandchildren. Mom said a short while back after marvelling at her large family. “ Look Louie, what we started back in 1954”.

The Lepere family lost a very special person in mom. We take solace knowing that she is reunited with dad in heaven, overlooking and guiding all of us. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.

Cremation has taken place, and interment will take place in June beside dad, with family attending.

Arrangements have been entrusted to EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma.
