Michael Scott Hanington Obituary

Wytopitlock, Maine – Michael Scott Hanington, 37 passed away unexpectedly on March 17, 2024, with his loving family by his side. He was born in Houlton, Maine on September 1, 1986 to Scott and Laurie (Pratt) Hanington.

Michael graduated from East Grand High School in Danforth, class of 2005 where he excelled at soccer and basketball. He loved all sports.

Following high school, his love for the outdoors led him to work for Hanington Timberlands and Hanington Lumber, his family’s businesses.

Michael was a devoted father doing all the things his son Jaxsyn loved to do such as snow sledding, playing basketball, football, hitting golf balls and playing catch for hours. He was always front and center at Jaxsyn’s school and sporting events. For the past 2 years he helped coach the American Youth Basketball League for which his son played. Some of Michael's favorite times were spent hiking with his son and fishing on the mighty Mattawamkeag River.

When Michael was 13, he was diagnosed with Alport’s Syndrome. He began dialysis in early 2013 and on November 5 of the same year, his mother donated her kidney to save his life. This gave him another 10 years to watch his newly born son grow up. In December of 2023, his kidney failed, and he began dialysis again. Never once did he complain or question why him. He lived life to the fullest surrounded by his loving family. He is now in Heaven and free from pain. His family is comforted knowing they have the promise of reuniting with him one day.

He was quiet, kind to everyone he met, and offered the best hugs. One cousin recently remarked that he was jealous of Michael’s collection of the “coolest Orlando Magic stuff.” Another said he was quiet but never shy to always tell family how much he loved them.

Michael is survived by his son Jaxsyn of Houlton, his stepdaughter Emma Fitzgerald of Herman and their mother Sonya Rouse of Houlton. His parents Scott and Laurie (Pratt) Hanington of Wytopitock and his brother Alex Blaine Hanington and Sarah Stoddard of Hodgdon. His nephews, Cameron and Jamesyn and niece Lexi, as well as special friend, Vann White of Wytopitlock who has in the short 7 years we have known him seemed like another brother. He is also survived by his grandmother, Sherry Pratt of Danforth along with several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his grandparents Hollis A. Hanington Jr. and Irma LeBlond Hanington and his grandfather Blaine (Shadow) Pratt, nephew Caden and his special Aunt Sharon Hanington Sibley.

The family would like to especially thank DaVita Dialysis Center in Lincoln and Maine Transplant Program in Portland for the excellent care of Michael.

Services will be held on Monday, March 25, at Military Street Baptist Church, located at 307 Military Street, Houlton, Maine with visitation from 1-2 PM and a memorial service to follow. We invite everyone to join us at the church for food and fellowship after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts be sent in Michael’s memory to Scott Hanington at P.O Box 90, Wytopitlock, Maine 04497 for Jaxsyn’s future education and athletic endeavors.
