Douglas Hazen Rice Obituary

Douglas Hazen Rice

November 13, 1932 to March 18, 2024

Doug was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick. One of seven children, he learned to respect, value and care for his family and small possessions. Both his father and mother loved the Lord and many times during Doug’s youth, the family traveled from the outskirts into Fredericton on a Saturday evening to hear the Salvation Army Band play and attend the services.

Doug’s home had no conveniences, no electricity, plumbing, or water. The wood stove with his mom’s expert care, kept the meals hot and ready to eat. Dad was handy man, carpenter, painter, and he was raised knowing right from wrong and realizing the consequences. Respect for elders and personal belongings was the norm. He was taught not to cheat or lie or steal, and he also quickly understood that if the teacher said he did wrong, he not only got punishment at school, but little brother would make sure mom or dad heard about it too.

While serving in the Canadian Naval Air, Doug married and had two children. His son, Paul Rice and Paul’s wife, Kelly, of Lower Sackville and granddaughter, Meghan have been Doug’s comfort and support. They have stood by him, supported him, and spent many good times together. They stand beside me and my family as well. I was very blessed as a widow, to have known Doug first as a good friend. We married in 2017 and my children and grandchildren love him dearly as well as his many good friends here. I and family extend deep gratitude to his physician, Dr. S. Singh for his many years of compassionate service to Doug, and to Colchester Hospital Third Floor East, Medical and Palliative Care.

Yes, Doug will be missed, but his homecoming into the Lord’s Kingdom must have been a glorious one. Doug loved the Lord Jesus Christ and gave his heart to him through the urging of the Spirit in his mid-forties. Baptised in the cold River Phillip in Port Howe by the Gospel Fellowship, Doug made continual spiritual progress through daily Bible reading and regular church attendance. His love for missionary workers in the field of Bible Camps throughout the Atlantic Region was evident.

We love you, Douglas Hazen Rice. And look forward to seeing you as you greet us when we too, by God’s grace, see our beloved Lord face to face.

Prepared for Doug’s funeral service by: Linda R. Hawes (Rice), Doug’s devoted wife.
