Carolyn J. Dinsmore Obituary

Carolyn J. (Ellsmore) Dinsmore passed away quietly in the early morning hours of Monday, March 18, 2024 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Machias. She passed in peace at age 86 with her children by her side.

Carolyn was born to parents Beatrice and Herbert Ellsmore on May 24, 1937 in Machias. She grew up mainly in the Machias area where she met her future husband, Carroll Lee Dinsmore. She later moved to Portland for a short time where she graduated from Portland High School in 1955.

Following graduation she married Carroll Dinsmore on Christmas Eve 1955. They moved to Hartford, Connecticut where they both worked at the large Pratt and Whitney plant. During this time in Hartford, their son Jack was born in 1957. The couple then returned to Maine and settled in Lubec near family and friends. In 1960, their daughter Lois was born at Ada Maloney’s maternity home.

Carolyn worked for most of her life, starting at Prout’s Bayside Farm as an egg processor. She then worked seasonally at the Seaview ice cream stand before becoming a long-term employee of the Lubec A&P, followed by the Machias A&P for several more years. She then worked for the Quik Shop in Lubec as a bookkeeper and clerk until retiring in 2003.

She enjoyed attending the Christian Temple church in Lubec, reading books, and spending time at the family camp on Gardner’s Lake. She also had a great love for gardening, especially flowers.

Carolyn was predeceased by her husband, Carroll Lee Dinsmore, brother Walter Ellsmore, sister Edith Farnsworth, and brother Joe Ellsmore.She is survived by brothers Roger Ellsmore and  Donald Ellsmore, her son Jack Dinsmore and his wife Elizabeth, and daughter Lois Flynn. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Catherine Singley and husband Christopher, Kelly Athearn and husband Brian, and Brandon Flynn and wife Amanda. Her family also includes 7 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews that she considered especially dear.Carolyn was focused on her family throughout her life and will be sorely missed by them and by everyone that knew her.

Carolyn’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the Machias Veteran’s Home nurses and staff for the exceptional care that they provided during the last 4 years of her life. Their compassion and professionalism exceeded all possible expectations.
