Joan Glover Crick, 91, of Newtown passed away peacefully on March 18. Joan was born on September 15, 1932, in Danbury, the daughter of the late Walter L. and Dorothy (Haight) Glover. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, James W. Crick, Jr.

Joan was a graduate of Newtown High School and University of Bridgeport. After college, Joan went to work as an administrative assistant/bookkeeper for Barden Corp., Danbury and then American Wire Corp., Newtown.

While in high school and college, she was an avid basketball and softball player. In 1970 Joan organized, directed and coached the first Newtown Parks and Recreation basketball league. She continued that work to 1981. The league honored her with a yearly trophy – Joan Crick Sportsman Award – which was given to a player in the league.

When Joan was in her 50’s, she took up golf. She joined Newtown Country Club in 1985 and continued to play golf up through her early 80’s. She loved competing in tournaments. Joan served on the club’s board as treasurer for ten years and then served six years as president. She was the first woman president in the history of Newtown Country Club. To say Joan was competitive in sports was an understatement.

Joan had a deep love for the Borough. She was proud to call the Borough her home. As a young child, she lived on Main Street. At the age of nine she and her family moved to a house on Glover Avenue that had been owned by her grandfather, Walter B. Glover (who Glover Avenue was named after). Then in 1960, Jim and Joan moved into their forever home also on Glover Avenue. Joan remained there until she moved into assisted living a few years ago.

Joan was 10th generation in Newtown and a direct descendant of John Glover, who was one of the founders of Newtown. Joan was elected as a Burgess to the Borough Board of Burgesses in 1980. In 1989, she was elected the Warden of the Borough and served in that position until 2009. She continued to serve as a Burgess until she resigned in 2018. She was also proud of her family heritage. She was the granddaughter of a Newtown selectman and the daughter of a dedicated public servant who held posts on the Boards of Selectmen, Finance, and Borough Board of Burgesses. Joan felt it was her civic duty to continue that legacy. Joan said the Borough was a very special and unique place.

Joan leaves behind her daughter, Maureen Crick Owen and her husband, Cramer, her sons, James W. Crick, Jr. and his wife, Lesly, and Michael W. Crick and his wife, Lisa. She was Grammy to her grandchildren, William Crick (Nicole), Benjamin Crick, Adam Crick, Mitchell Crick, Emily Crick and James W. Crick, IV and her great-grandson, Winn Laemers-Crick. She also leaves behind her nephew, Lee W. Glover, Jr. She was predeceased by her grandson, Matthew James Crick, and her brother, Lee W. Glover, Sr.

Family and friends will be received on Sunday, March 24 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown.

A Funeral Service will be celebrated on Monday, March 25 at 10 a.m. at Trinity Church in Newtown. Interment will follow at Newtown Village Cemetery.
