Miriam Lois Lehman

Miriam Lois (Getz) Lehman, age 87, a resident of Naperville since 1949, passed away Monday, May 28, 2018, at Edward Hospital in Naperville. She was born in Savanna, Illinois on January 28, 1931, the daughter of Walter P. and Laura L. (Weber) Getz. She is survived by her brother Evan (Janet) Getz; her children, Judy (Robert) Busse, Nancy (Mark) Scott, John (Jeanine) Lehman and Carol (Ron) Anderson-Lehman; her thirteen grandchildren, Greg (Meg) Busse, Kris Busse, Brian (Amy) Scott, Aaron (Melissa) Scott, Sarah (Justin) Dobson, Jason (Megan) Scott, Ashley Scott, Alyssa (Joe) Quebbeman, Mike (Abbey) Lehman, Rachel Lehman, Jesse, Samuel and Laura Anderson-Lehman and her eight great grandchildren, Lucy, Luke and Lincoln Busse, Emily and Rebecca Scott, Cooper Scott, Vivian Dobson and Layla Scott. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Lehman. Miriam and Robert were married in Chicago on August 1, 1953. She was a graduate of North Central College Class of 1953 and received her master’s degree from Northern Illinois University in guidance and counseling. She taught in the Naperville public schools for more than 25 years. She began her career teaching third grade at Ellsworth Elementary School and took many years off to raise their four children returning to teach third grade at Elmwood Elementary School for many years. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church since 1955, where she served on many committees, was very active in United Methodist Women holding several leadership positions, was an active member of the Forum Sunday School class, sang in the church choir, and represented Grace Church for many years at the Northern Illinois Annual Conference. She was a charter member of the Naperville chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) having served as the president from 1967-1969 and was honored as one of four named Women of the Year in 2006. Miriam was also active in the League of Women Voters. She was very proud of her Alma Mater, North Central College, staying active in the alumni association as a class representative and promoting the College whenever she could. Until her death, Miriam communicated with seven of her college friends for over sixty years via their Round Robin letters, writing a letter to the group and sending the envelope on its way from one “Robin” to the next. Miriam enjoyed playing bridge and played monthly with a group of women from church for almost 50 years. She loved taking photographs and was rarely at an event without pulling out her camera to document everything. She and Bob thoroughly enjoyed attending concerts and musicals, especially at the College. In retirement, they traveled extensively, cruising and even visiting all 50 states in one year. Miriam enjoyed working on genealogy and her many collections. Memorials may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church Foundation in her name. Visitation will be held at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Homes & Crematory, 516 S. Washington St., Naperville on Friday, June 1, 2018 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 2, 12:00 noon at Grace United Methodist Church, 300 E. Gartner Rd., Naperville, with visitation from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be following at Naperville Cemetery.
