Barbara Alice Volker Obituary

Barbara (Alice) Davis Volker was born on April 20, 1936 and took her walk down Glory Street on March 11, 2024. The celebration of Barbara‘s life will be at Heritage Village on March 21 at 2 PM. There will be an additional celebration in April in Lebanon, Tennessee.

Barbara was born in Edgerton, Wyoming to Ruth Cherry Davis and Oral O. Davis. She graduated high school at the American school in Japan in 1954 and continued her education at Chadron State College in Nebraska, pursuing a teaching career. Her first teaching job was in Minneapolis, Kansas, in a small one room school. That was always a good story to hear about her experience there.

Barbara married Verlyn Robert Volker on December 20,1957 in Chadron, NE. They lived in the Kansas City area until 1978 until Vern’s job at GlaxoSmithKline took the family to Grand Island, Nebraska. After Vern passed in 2008 she moved to Lebanon, Tennessee to be with her youngest daughter and her kids. She lived in a few places in Tennessee but her favorite by far was Rutland Place in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. Then Covid hit and she fought hard, but it changed her forever. Barb moved to Platte City, Missouri in 2022 to live out the rest of her life close to her oldest daughter.

One of our fondest memories of her is all the nursing homes that she volunteered at, generally coercing a grandchild or three to come along. She had a big heart for elderly people, and wanted to make sure they knew they were cared about. Barbara was very crafty, she would crochet blankets for the whole family. She also liked to make greeting cards and send them to people in the nursing homes and to people at her church. One of her favorite hobbies was genealogy. She also loved to read and make origami squares. Her grandkids greatly benefited from her love of learning, and they always had something fun and educational to work and play with.

Barbara and Vern started a woodworking business, Davi-Drew Woodcrafters (a play on the names of the oldest two grandkids) and would travel to craft shows across Nebraska. Vern did the woodworking and Barbara created the brochures to showcase his work. It was something she truly enjoyed.

She was proceeded in death by her baby girl, Vicki Raye Volker, her husband Verlyn, her parents and her sister Carolyn Kennedy. She leaves behind her daughters Debra McDowell and her husband Brian, and Stephanie Rothe. Barbara was loved by seven grandchildren - Andrew McDowell (Jami), David McDowell (Angelie), Amanda Waters, Richie Rothe, Joshua Rothe (Brandi), Molly Rothe, Maggie Rothe and ten great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, if you could make a donation in her name to the cerebral palsy foundation. Arrangements By: Rollins Funeral Home—Platte City, MO—Ph. 816.858.2129. www.rollinsfuneralhome.net
