<p>Basil LaRue Sampson, 92 of Covington, Virginia died Thursday, March 14, 2024 at his residence.</p><p><br></p><p>He was born in Covington on June 7, 1931, a son of the late Joseph Franklin Sampson and Elvira Wilhelm Sampson. Basil served in the United States Marine Corps and was a retired digester operator for Westvaco with 45 years of service. Mr. Sampson served as past President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he held many offices. The love he had for his church family and those close to him was immense. He was a member of Cliffview Golf Club and enjoyed playing golf with The Senior League. </p><p><br></p><p>Mr. Sampson was preceded in death by his wife, Glenna Lee Sawyers Sampson; 4 sisters, Phyllis Booth, Irene Aynes, Ruby Leffel, and Violet Hayward; a brother, Wayne Sampson; and a grandson Jason Sampson.</p><p><br></p><p>He is survived by 3 daughters, Debra Carol Sampson Elmore and husband Mike of Ridgeway, Linda Sampson Smiley and husband Jay of Petersburg, KY, and Holly Joleen Shields and husband Jason of Roanoke; 3 sons, Douglas Gene Sampson and wife Wendy of Salt Lake City, UT, Robert Lee Sampson and wife Patsy of Covington, and Brian LaRue Sampson and wife Cameo of Beckley, WV; 2 sisters, Shirley Burdette, and husband Richard, of White Sulphur Springs, WV, and Juanita Musser of Covington; 2 brothers, Darrell Sampson, and friend Julie McCormick, and Gene Sampson, both of Covington; 15 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. </p><p><br></p><p>A Funeral Service will be conducted on Tuesday morning, at 11:00 A.M. on March 19, 2024 from the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Ray Lockhart, Jr., Branch President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Covington, officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor.
